Jims 131 needs complete rebuild after 7,000 miles!

Hi guys, some of you may remember my initial grief with this motor..
It continues...
So, had motor for just over a year. 7,000 miles. Broke in as per Jims instructions. Not counting the first oil change at 50 miles, or the second at 250 miles or the third at 500 miles it has had the oil changed every 1500 miles. After breakin switched to Amsoil. Have the Dakota Digital oil temp gauge in the Baker Plus one pan and never seen higher than 235. ( I havn't overheated the motor).
Motor was always noisy. Started to use a quart of oil every 500-600 miles... Decided to change the cams, ordered some Woods lifters at same time. First sign of internal grief was when pulling the lifters... roller axles had an average of about 1/8" play!! They were a time bomb waiting to grenade!! So much for the new style Jims lifters.
I took bike up to Dean at his new shop, Vancouver Island Performance, and asked him to check things out for me...Checked oil pump... it's severely scored. Pulled heads, rear exh valve seal is toast. Pulled cylinders, rings are shot, pistons show some scuffing, crank was welded by Jims, however, have 4 thou runout. Get the rods in the right position and you can just feel an up and down looseness as well.
Bottom line is this motor needs complete rebuild. Yes, I have rode it. Rode it hard. Never abused, never overreved it, always let it warm up before getting on it, in short didn't do anything wrong. (Apart from buying a Jims motor).
Jims "warranty" is very simple. Pull the motor, crate it up and send it to them, they will decide if it's warranty or not, fix it (or not), and you pay the shipping. Based on my first experience with them about warranty, add to that I am out of warranty by a couple of months, not worth the effort.
So..... The rebuild begins... As I am up here in the North West I am having Dean send heads and cylinders to Baisley, re configure rocker arm geometry, port match the intake, bore cylinders, etc etc. Decided to go with the T Man 662-2 cams with the 4deg key and Tmans 20deg dome pistons so Baisley will reshape heads to match. Crank going to Darkhorse for full treatment including dynamic balance.

A blatent plug for VIP.... Dean is bending over backwards to help me out with this nightmare. Great communication, great knowledge.
He is a class act and I am sure you will start to hear more and more about him and his builds/tunes. ( He just installed a brand new loaded dyno in his new shop as well)..

question.....

I've read lots of positive stuff about the "Singh Grooves" ??
I can not find anything bad, anywhere.. Anybody have a direct
experience??

Man, that really sucks to hear. Would love to see some pics..Sounds like you got the right attitude about it and got a good builder in your corner..

The grooves are groovy. Work well as stated, but your using 20 deg dome so i don't think that's been done before or needed as the precision fit domes are very efficient.
Talk to Dan b about them.

Here is a groove for anyone that hasnt seen them before.

Sorry to hear about your motor... It gives me some pause as I just rebuilt my 96 inch with a JIMS 113 stroker kit, roller rockers, hydrosolid lifters and adjustable pushrods... Dan Baisley is one of the best in the business and Darkhorse will fix your bottom end so it sounds like your on a good plan for a good motor...

I'm not sure what's going on with JIMS products, it seems their quality control is starting to wane a bit and parts are not holding up... I read in another thread where some builders had the JIMS 120 crate motor, the flywheels still shifted on the crank even tho they were welded...

It's a shame really, JIMS used to be one of the premier products out there... Goodluck in your rebuild, keep us posted on your results...

dont think you can use the groves with those pistons.
or need to actually.
sorry about the bad luck. Jim's just isnt what they used to be.
good luck on the rebuild.
what heads are on there now?

EDIT chop beat me to it

TXChop,

Can you snap a picture from a bit farther away. I too and just learning about the groves.

Boatnut,
Sorry about the bad run. Sure sounds like you got it handled well now. Should be good.

Thanks,
Bob

Thanks guys... My main interest in the grooves was for their claimed ability to greatly reduce detonation ,more than the efficiency thing. Maybe it's the same thing though when I think about it? I've just installed the IST ignition as well so thinking the grooves may help it to run more advance??

WOW... that pump looks petty bad. I don't think I've ever seen one with scoring on the outer surface and inner pump housing like that. I'm wondering what would cause the pump to score like that. I've seen scoring on the mating surface were the cam plate meets pump but not on the inside like that. Any thoughts on what causes scoring like that?

Pinion shaft run out. Crank issues.

My guess is that Hobans is going to find that the hardened surface of the big end of the connecting rods is not so hard anymore. Or ever was for that matter.

I'll keep the rebuild updated here with pics as we progress. Dean will be shipping crank assembly to Darkhorse and heads/cylinders to Baisley on Tuesday. Clive.

Hi guys, some of you may remember my initial grief with this motor..
It continues...
And so does my grief with one of their 131 POS motors. I had less then 3,000 miles when i decided to install gear drive cams. When I tore it down I immediately discovered the oil pump was close to destruction, and the cam plate was wore to useless. I measured the run-out on the crank and discovered 14/1000. I called Jim's and they arranged to get the motor back for inspection, i paid for shipping both ways. They call me back and said they will rebuild on their dime. I asked for a trued and welded crank and told them i was installing gear drive cams.. they said no problem, true and weld is $500 and true will be dead on. Yea right!!! this weekend i finally got some time to install the motor and started with the gear drive cam install.. First order, measure run-out.. Guess what ??? run-out is sitting at 2.5/1000, straight from Jim's as is.. Can yo believe this crap????? How in hell can they even be in business.. Briggs & Stranton builds a better motor and tighter specs then this...

they charged me $500 for the true/weld service. The $500 is their normal optional fee for a welded crank as they send them to another shop, thats what they tell me anyway. I agree.. the true is to be expected and nothing less... you got to wonder about these a-holes,,, i should have suspected something when they demanded a money order...,,, now that tells me they know they sell garbage... it's an afterthought so it does not do me any good at this point.. i talked to SB Charlie this afternoon about it.. First off, he only charges $75 for the weld, and $250 to fix Jim's problem... guess where im sending the motor now... for my 2 cents here,, i would recommend anyone thinking of a Jims motor to look elsewhere...

Jims POS

Hey CVO biker, sorry you are living the same nightmare. Got to look at the positive side though? Really nice cases and nice wheels when re-worked by a pro outfit.
That they can continue to produce this stuff and charge what they do kinda makes a sad statement eh? Unfortunately neither of us did quite enough homework before parting with our cash..... They survive on guys like us. Enough knowledge to be dangerous.
I strongly suggest you replace the lifters they supply as well. Complete bullshit that the new ones are "fixed". Mine were literally about to grenade with 7,000 serviced to death miles on em!!

How do you tell when they are about to grenade?

Has someone shared this thread with Jim's? I honestly don't hear many good things about them anymore on this forum. Quite scary stuff actually. I hesitate to buy anything made by them for HD under the SE label. Wow. Maybe they are too busy collecting $$$ to feel they have to notice. -Tutt

A friend of mine has a Jims 116 and after the 2nd or 3rd oil change he had some larger metal bits in the oil not the fine metallic you would be used to seeing in a fresh motor. But it hasnt had any issues yet and runs strong. I wonder if maybe he needs to have somebody look into his motor to check it out. I am new to all this stuff but trying to learn with all the good threads you guys have posted.

Pikeslayer:
Not exactly a subtle little thing.... Take a magnet and put on lifter roller, hold lifter body firmly on workbench, "wiggle the magnet up and down" and observe approx 1/8" play in lifter roller shaft/roller!! Ticking time bomb in my opinion....
C Cat:
Thanks for the thumbs up. I really believe I'm going to get what I thought I was getting the first time lol....

Build update.......

Axtell has finished matching the the cylinders to the T Man 20cc domed pistons,he then sent to Diamond Cut in Vegas, Mr Baisley has heads, Hobans working crank as we speak, Dean At Vancouver Island Performance has cases prepped and waiting to re-assemble, I've been spending WAY too much time on line buying every diamond cut piece Covingtons make and brakes from Howard at motorcyclemetal.com lol..
Probably going to be end of March when done. I'll try to post some pics as the parts come back together... Dean will be breaking in on dyno and I will post sheets. I'm going to wait until it's got 1,000+ miles before I give her any NOS. I'll re post dyno results with/without then.

Got her running yet. I have had good luck with Jarz Performance up in abbotsford

I wish she was ready... Going to be a while yet. Reality is maybe end of this month. I'll post pics of parts as they come in and update build progress
