So I know this has been hashed over repeatedly as there are other threads about it. What size tank do I really have? 3.8 gal. or 4.2 gal. ? Im told by very good mechanics its 3.8 gal. on the center fill tanks. You wont get 4 gallons of gas in it. What about the side fill tanks on the fxlr and fxr2, 3 and 4?

Is that 3.8 minus the space taken for the fuel sending init and the float?
I’ve never been able to get more than 3.0 gallons in at any given time…

Most FXR tanks are 4.2 gallons total - 3.8 main with .4 in reserve. I have seen 3.8 gallons mentioned in print, but I believe this to be based on the pre-reserve volume.

The 1988+ FXRS dual (looking) fillers with tank mounted tach & speedo are 4.5 gallons total.

Maybe in order to convince oneself you would have to start out with a completely dry tank. Then fill it up and see how many gallons before overflowing. Total of the tank is the total capacity. Reserve is done through the fuel valve or petcock...so its not added to capacity. Reserve is always subtracted, never added. Thats why im bringing this up. They can't really be 4.2 gallon tanks. Maybe...IDK.

Right, reserve is only a function of the the petcock.

So this got me a bit curious so I looked into it a bit further and got conflicting info.

My 1987 owners manual states the total capacity at 3.8 gallons (.4 of which is reserve.)

My 1987 catalog has the FXR with a total capacity of 4.2.

I've always thought it was 4.2 because it corresponds to my mileage and gas gauge pretty accurately.

Ok, I need to know: what does the “43” stand for? I ask because I’ve been waiting since the ‘06’s to find out! Steve at GMR started this (I think) along with the doof clenas and it was a thing on this forum back then. He helped me with a 98” nicacyl-barrel build that was a whole lot of fun to ride but I never got to be part of the club…

This all started with my having issues with the fxr running out of fuel and the Intellitronix gas gauge and me thinking it wasn't registering correctly. The Indy servicing it found that my gas cap wasnt venting and caused the stalling out. Its an after market vented gas cap not the original cap. Then this lead to the capacity of the fuel tank discussion.

I believe I qualify with 2 scoped knees, 3 RCR’s and one biceps tendon reattachment. Me and Mr. Oxy were good friends back when they were given freely. I’m sure glad I don’t have to deal with that crap now, if you get my drift!

Politics are not allowed in the general forum. We have a section just for Religion and Politics. Other than in that section, keep your opinions to yourself. And my advice is to just avoid politics all together on this forum.

The offending posts have been removed.

The offenders have been placed on my list of potential camp patrons.

And this thread is closed. Don't even think about continuing this stuff in another thread. Penalties for insulting the President of the United States will be harsh. And that applies to any and all of them. Don't like it, move on. This is a motorcycle forum. Not a venue for political idiots to stir up trouble.
