Changing over an older 5 speed tranny case to one that has the speedo sensor hole. Curious if anyone know if you need anything else other than the speed sensor unit and digital speedo to make this work, Was wondering if there is anything internal that needs to be done to the tranny so the sensor can read the speed. Appreciate any info that can be offered Thanks

The sensor just plugs in. Its magetic, not sure if it uses the Hall effect or not.

Theres not much to it, the hole needs to be above whatever it is it looks at.

If you are simply changing cases, then there is nothing else to it. The sensor just plugs in.

If you are machining a set of older cases to use a sensor, then their is allot more involved. I machined the hole in the case of my old softail. If I had to do it over again, I would have bought a new case.

I have a new delkron case. I just was curious what the sensor was sensing, gear, shaft, etc. Wanted to make sure I didn't have to add anything before buttoning it up..

I believe I understand what Malx is asking. He is asking "what do I need if I had a mechanical speedometer and now have a tranny with a speed sensor hole"?

The reason I know is that I have just changed transmissions and my new one has the speed sensor hole and the sensor (sending unit) as well. I just purchased a plug (get a good one with the o-ring on it) and plugged the hole. I do not want to alter my speedometer, but it appears that Malx does.

However....if it was a simple as plugging the sensor directly into an electronic speedo...I would consider it. My new tranny is a recent Harley take-off so all my stuff is HD.

Come on techno-geeks....chime in here! Does the signal from the sensor pass through the ECU or some other module before it gets to the electronic speedo?

Hey fellas, Sorry for the delay. Greatly appreciate the info. I was out of the country for the last couple months so i didn't have the availability of the forum. Once I realized i needed to upgrade the mechanical speedo to an electronic unit I as well as the sensor it all fell into place. Been on the site eveyday since I've been back and get to absorb a wealth of info from you guys. Anyway the bikes are ready and just waiting on the roads to settle down and the sand & gravel to get cleared. We are talking Maine.. Thanks again Malx

Therm. Was it 40 - 60 thou? I thought I had seen a set of taller gears by andrews. Or can you just set the height of the sensor to the right distance. Then don't you also need to convert to an electronic speedo along with wiring changes.

No idea as to what the distance should be. But I'm thinking it's just a Hall effect sensor so .017 to as much as .040 should work. Be sure to use a brass feeler gauge.

I"m not sure about the gears. I know Zippers and some others sell heavy duty gear sets. But I would think that was just materials and tooth angle.

Not sure what you are doing, but if I might just give Baker a call and see what they have to say on it.

I was going to switch out to a electronic speedo, install a sensor but I assume that there're some wiring issues to get it all to work. Pretty sure it's not just a plug and play scenario.
