Thanks for the thoughts.

I was just brainstorming future work on the RK and staring at my Deuce when the thought hit me.

I suspect there is something that might be an issue of significance or someone else might have thought of this with the abundance of deuce rear wheels out there for cheap.

Ron at Phoenix Customs told me the front-end work on my RK project should be done today or tomorrow. The re machining of the billet legs was not as simple as his normal work on stock legs. He was “extra special” careful with the compression set up to assure the front end did not bottom out or top out the fender on the under side of the tree’s. This required multiple installations and removals. He also has the blank for the front wheel in and some renderings of my design ready for approval.

I will go over my Deuce wheel thoughts with him and see what he thinks.

Converting From 16 To 18 Rear On 06 Flhtcui

Has Anyone Converted Up To An 18" REAR RIM On A 06 Flhtcui? I Am Having Problems After The Moto Wrenches Said It Was Okay To Do, And Now After Spending $2000 On Rim, I Bottom Out When Loaded Or With A Passenger...what Did They Not Do To Make This Conversion Acceptable??? The Dealer Is 180 Miles Away, And I Sold My 16" Rim To Another Guy Shortly After The Install. I Converted To 21" On Front, And It Seems Fine...thank You Guys For Giving Me Some Experienced Solutions To Read About!!!! Ultraflamesrider

Well, the Deuce wheel is on the Road King. I have learned why more people don't do the mod. As soon as I have time to sit down and detail it, I will offer the process it took.

It does look really great though.

What size was the Deuce wheel? How did it effect the ride?

It is the stock 17" Deuce rear wheel w/ a 160 on it.

Got it completed a few months back. The stock '06 Deuce wheel with 170 tire that I picked up for $100.00

I quickly learned why more people don't perform this mod.

Cosmetically it requires either a replacement of the rear fender or as in my case, splitting and adding 1" to its width. Since I am doing a full bagger with custom 'glass rear overfender, I just cut mine and added 1" down the middle, finished out the metal work and coated it in truck bed liner for durability.

To fitting the wheel itself:
It first had to be opened to accept the 1" (25mm) axle/bearings. Other I have heard have done this themselves with hole saws but I had Phoenix Custom machine it.

For proper positioning/centering Phoenix Customs also machined me a set of shims to properly center it and space it to ride with the stock rear brake caliper and brake rotor. Also eased the back side of the caliper bracket itself to clear the center of the Deuce wheels sloping hub better. As these pieces do not change distance with respect to one another during operations, this was likely not imperative but it made me feel better having more clearance.

Next came the drive pulley and belt:
Here again, some have made wider tires fit by spacing, I was doing this with the bike down for a lot of other changes so did it for best fit/operation. After buying a 1 1/4 and 1 1/8th drive pulley and belts I ended up going with a 1" pulley/belt set up again for added clearance. Naturally this involved everything required to replace a belt to be performed but I did retain the front drive pulley as it offered plenty of run out. This also required losing the belt guard (I may put it back after modifications later).

All-in-all I am happy with the result though it was hardly as simple and straight forward as I had envisioned at the start. It is still tons cheaper than the 4k 200 tire kits on the market for nearly equal results.

Just some of the random pics along the way:

Traakon, great work there, well done!

My own more modest efforts have been fitting a 2007 swingarm and brake, with an 05 wheel, to my 1990 FLHS. I squeezed a 150/80 Avon Venom in while I was at it.

Having read this thread right through a couple of comments. A 150 is the widest tyre recommended for a stock 3" rim, so a 160 is pushing it a bit IMHO. More suitable for a 3.5" or 4" rim. On earlier Evos my 150 only just fits up in the stock rear fender and I don't believe a 160 would go. I understand later Evos have a wider fender.

I previously had a 140/90 Venom in there, with the belt guard modified to give clearance. Theoretically a 150 should fit and I tried hard to get one in along with a 1 1/2" wide belt, but eventually gave up and went for the later spec narrow belt. I have read that some owners have got them in, but I reckon it is very marginal. The narrower belt cures everything!

I am close to a possible wheel change. I have a 06 Flhtcui. I was hoping to run a 21/18 setup with the the rear tire being a 150 or 160 which ever fits. I've read through this thread and did not see a solution to ultraflamesride problem. Am I missing something? Can i run a 18" 150 on the rear with the stock fender? What spacer do I need exactly? I'm a little confused. Thanks for any help in advance. I'd like to be clear on this subject before dropping 2000$.

Your fender is wide enough for a 150 tyre, so the risks IMHO are in the increased diameter of an 18" tyre. A 150/80x16 tyre is 25.2" in diameter, the lowest profile suitable 18" tyre is a 150/70x18, which is 26.3" in diameter. So there is a loss of clearance, which say, shorter shocks will make worst.

It will be interesting to hear from someone who is successfully running that sort of setup.

My Deuce rear wheel recently arrived......

I'm running into a similar problem with my 1998 Road King and 18" rear wheel. I just put a new tires on and Metzler discontinued the 140/70 R18 that I had on the back previously. I wasn't complaining too much about having to put a wider tire on 150/70 R18. The tire fits and does not rub the belt, but I do have a problem with my Legends Air Suspension allowing the rear tire to bottoming out on the fender when I lower it completely. I'm not too worried, but it would definitely suck to not be able to ride my bike if the compressor ever bites the dust. Any ideas on how to put bump stops on a touring swing arm?

You're riding on the back of a very old thread here, it would be better to start a new one. Quite frankly bump stops are integral with the shocks in the majority of cases - it's their job to absorb and stop bumps!

Hi,
I had the Stock tires on the Stock rim forever. I'm just going to out on the 140/16 Dunlop D402 Touring MU85B16. Anyone ever have a issue with that ?
