Marvel Mystery Oil

A Harley mechanic recently told me he puts some Marvel Mystery Oil in his gas tank at every fill up. He has the same bike as I do-1988 FLHS Electra Glide. He said this protects the bike against the reformulated higher octane ethanol-added gasoline we get in the Milwaukee area. Has anyone had good or bad experience with this practice?

#3 ·
We use the stuff in the bikes and cars, oil and gas. Heard good things about it from an ACTUAL ROCKET SCIENTIST on the VTF!

#4 ·
I've used it in all manner of infernal combustion engines in the oil and gas both...and now use it to improve mileage and pump lubrication in my Cummins diesel...good for whatever ails ya! Sure this stuff ain't snake oil???

I looked up the MSDS once and it said the mystery is Stoddard solvent.

@gree: Marvel Myster Oil is a solvent and had it's place in the fifties or sixties. It basically strips out sludge and deposits out and cleans the engines. Without getting into detail, it's unneeded on the more efficient engine designs of the past 20 years. Other simular brands/type use kerosene, naphthalene, xylene, acetone and isopropanol. %potstir@

To each their own. If it works for you or believe it works for you, then who I'm I to say. :dunno:

Don't Harley engines have an old design? Wouldn't that mean that it has old problems and that they need an old solution?

Crap! You got me on that one! I don't even have a good come back on that one! :bowdwn: Ok, I would use Marvel in all three holes inlcuding the gas tank. Who knows, you could have the cleanest running Harley around. :roflback: :roflback:

Hi I am an Aircraft Technician Jets mostly Transport Category BIG ONES

MMO (Marvel Mystery Oil) Is GREAT Stuff -- As a matter of fact It is one of the only products produced for the Automotive Industry that got Accepted and Approved by the F.A.A. and NTSB to be used in Reciprocating Air Cooled Aircraft Engines. ( In Leamans Terms Piston Engines) It is also sold under a different name By Ford Motor Company (FOMOCO) as Top Cylinder Cleaner.

What this stuff actually does is burns the carbon off the Combustion Chamber, Valve Train. Pistons, and is a wonderful Hyd. Lifter Cleaner. It will also CLEAN YOUR INJECTOR NOZZLES. It also cleans the oil passages in your engine if used in the crankcase. Back in the days of carburated car engines I would pour a whole quart down the throat of an idleing car -- SMOK LIKE HELL but it would actually quiet the valve train and improve performance after 25 miles of driveing after the smoke cleared of course. I would alos put a Quart in the Gas Tank and A Quart in the crankcase. IF THERE WAS ANYTHING THAT CAME CLOSE TO "TUNE UP IN A CAN" This is it. When added to the crankcase you should change your oil and filter 1000 miles later. You dont want the loose carbon, and sludge to be in there too long.

I highly recommend this stuff, GREAT PRODUCT I have been useing it for 20 or so years and when ever i get that this engine isn't running like it should and the Tune Up didn't help -- I break out the MMO and after 25 to 50 Miles it just seem to pur like NEW

Peace
Dan

You Are WRONG -- Solvent?? Are you NUTS!!! Dude I would love to see you put NAPTHA or Acetone in your engine -- Can I be there when you do -- I love to see ENGINES BLOW UP IN A FIREY MESS Pistons flying, Heads 10 feet in the air. Hell I would pay you 20 buck to put it on thats incredible

It BURNS THE CARBON OFF THE PISTONS VALVES AND COMBUSTION CHAMBER. Among other things -- See Post Above.

Actually, No one has been able to reproduce this stuff. It has YES Distilled KEROSENE/MINERAL SPIRITS and some form of DISTILLED NAPTHA. So does every other refined Petrolium product known to man. No other ingredients are released. It is a PETROLIUM PRODUCT NOT A SOLVENT and it does wonders to Sick running engines by BURNING THE CARBON DEPOSITS OFF THEM.

Sounds great!....So for reduced warranty expense...why dont GM , Ford,Honda,Toyota,Mercedes,Porsche...etc.. know about this stuff. ?

Ya. those Mercedes and Porsche engineers are mostly inept anyway.

My neighbor spread newspapers all over his lawn..I asked him what the hell he was doing! Said.."it keeps the elephants away" I said there isnt one for thousands of miles!!! he said "see"

#14 ·
okay for those who use MMO has anyone actually tasted it to see if it tastes as good as it smells....I wish Homer Simpson were my neighbor he would taste it. Last year my Father in-law got ahold of a 1974 ford van with something like 13,000 miles. It sat forever without being run. the valves were sticking and clattering and I dumped a bottle of mmo in the oil and in the gas and after a short period it sounded like normal, but the carb began leaking like a sieve..

Try this site for the MSDS: http://www.setonresourcecenter.com/msds/docs/wcd00043/wcd04377.htm

This will shows the MSDA on Marvel Mystery. Take a look at Section Xll-Ingredients.

Here's the ingredients:
Benzene, 1,2 Dichloro- which is a solvent for waxes, gums, resins, tars, rubbers, oil, asphalts etc...

Mineral Spirits which is paint thinner which I would pencil in as a solvent.

Napthenic Hydrocarbons which is a refined petroleum fraction that contains a high percentage of various types of hydrocarbons. (Commonly used in drilling fluids)

Now, just looking at these...Do I really want to add this stuff to my oils in my scooter. :nope: Well maybe if other are doing it! :whatever: Of course I would...I'm so much smarter than the chemists that make up the various oil/synthetics.

Hey....2006FLSTNI, I rest my case! If you want to use it, then by all means do so. Heck, if I was you, I'd just slap that "lubricant" in all the bikes fluids. As I've mentioned before, if it makes ya feel warm and fuzzy, then who the hell is am I to say different! If nothing else it should keep the insides of the bike real clean.

And the percentages that are in there are In almost ALL ENGINE OIL PRODUCTS -- They are BY Products of CRACKING CRUDE OIL -- Look up TRANNY FLUID I bet you will find it in ther also.

NOW I REST MY CASE It is a BY PRODUCT of Crude Oil -- It is public Knowledge -- The actual ingredients that arent mentioned is the stuff that makes it Work

Hey, 2006.. Cool you jets! Not trying to get into a Pi$$ing match. I'm just saying that MMO has three ingredients...pretty much all solvents. Also, the MSDS doesn't leave out "aren't mentioned" ingredients that would make MMO work.

Speaking of tranny fluid, it's also basically a solvent.., why do you think it's called "tranny fluid" instead of "tranny lubricant". We use to use it to clean out old sludge out of engines along with keroseen....not say that was a smart thing to do, but it worked. As mentioned, if you like the stuff...use it! Happy riding.

As to useing "solvent" to get rid of carbon build up - if it works... I do not think that it hurt it.
AS a side note... Years ago I got a car that was sitting 5 years and seemed to be locked up engine we pulled the plugs and put marvel mystrey oil in the cylinders. we let sit 1 day, put the plugs back in and we got it started. That stuff freed up the rings and got it running. It was an old pos, but it ran.

#23 ·
Like I stated earlier "IT IS TUNE UP IN A CAN" literally -- It has done wonders on many a car or bike I have owned and on many JUNKERS that my friends had acquired over the years. I once had a buddy of mine that had the Sickest sounding Valve tapping POS I ever rode in -- Told him to pull over at the next auto parts store -- 3 quarts of MMO later and that car ran as quiet as can be. It really does work. 1 Qt Down the Carb -- 1 Qt in the Gas -- 1 Qt in the crankcase. Hell it even smoothed out after like 100 miles and actually ran hard and HP increased. Pick up was out of the roof.

Peace
Dan

If you are using a good oil to begin with you will never need a product like this because there will not be stuck rings, varnish buildup, sludge, and etc. All the above testimonials were talking about machinery that was abused and or using the cheapest oils on the market at the time. With todays oils clean-up additives should not be necessary, especially in motorcycles, since most people change out and service their bikes more frequently than necessary.

George,

I pulled my engine down with 8000 miles to go BB. The amount of what I would call soft carbon on the pistions was surpising to me at the time. Amsoil had been run for 7000 of those miles.

Quite a few folks have seen the same carbon build up in these engines. I believe it's from the breather systems dumping the oil mist back into the intake.

I have been using a different product to address removal of this carbon on a regular basis, but I suspect that MMO will do the same.

I will know if it's working when I put some heads on it this winter.

I believe regular use of a carbon removing product is needed .
