Great sounding Pipes - Recommendations?

Hi all!
Every so often i hear a great set of nice thunderous sounding Harley Pipes. I have had two different set of noisier Pipes on my Softail. I guess i was never realy happy with the sound out put on either of them and have since replaced them with a set of FXST 2008 model standard Pipes. Much more bearable to my ears too but too quiet to want to have on there all the time. I prefer to use those on long cruises. I don't like Pipes that sound barky, coarse, too loud and overbearing. I like the ones that have a slightly muffled rumble about them and yet sound thunderous when putting the throttle on it a little. Vance Hines? I like to keep the cost down and yet have the quality as described. Any suggestions are wellcomed and much appreciated.

I bet you get a wide range of opinions Ray, here's mine. I really like the sound of the good ol Screamin Eagle slip ons. They are certainly not the best for performance but the sound is mellow yet they will holler & bark if you get into it real good.

My advice.....go to a local dealer on a saturday when they are bust and hang out in the parking lot.
@gree:The best advise I've ever read about pipe/muffler selection...for hearing what you like.. Two thumbs up...

That said.. I dig my VH longshot slip-ons, but the Rush slip-ons on my old RK were sweet..

Everyone will have their favorites. I had V&H's on mine when I got it, and have never switched. Good performance, great sound, and I like the looks too. Can be loud if I really want them to be...but has a nice hot rod sound at idle. To me, exactly what a Harley should sound like. I'm sure the other mfg's listed above are all good too. Good advice about going to a dealership, or find a rally/swap meet too...

Check out the Kuryakyn Crusher - deep at idle, kick ass at throtle up, quiet enough to talk to your passenger at cruising speed - and they look good. Am putting a set on my 07 Ultra 103.....replacing Screamin Eagle.

I had Vance&Hines straightshots HS on my Heritage which i think sounded great. After the engine build i switched to a RB racing LSR 2in1 pipe for better performance. I really love the sound of this pipe. Low rumble usually but comes alive when you get on it. I still have the straightshots if you are interested in buying them.

I've got Rush Bologna cut slipons on my 05 Heritage. I like the fact that you can change the baffles to get the sound your looking for. I've also got a Rinehart 2 into 1 that I ran for awhile. Got to say the low end grunt and mid range was much improved with that setup

Yep, ProPipe. I had the V&H Big Shots on my bike but as good as they sounded, I just wanted something a bit quieter. I'm very happy with both the sound and volume of the sound with the ProPipe. It's all dependant on what you do with your right hand.
It can be quiet or loud, up to you. Not to mention that my performance improved with them as well.

Thank you everyone for your input.
all is valuable information!
Keep your infos coming as i am looking for a pattern here. So far Propipe is looking good. Not over powering, good sound rumble and volume is appealing.
Knock out one of the Buffles from my standard pipes , as one suggested? Not sure if that is a good idea or even doable? :)
I do intend to listen to some at the local HD Dealer.
It is a lot of money just to find it is not quiet right.
Cheers" Ray

I really like my Rinehart slip-ons. And my fiance has V&H oval slip-ons that sound really great, too. They replaced his SE slip-ons, which just didn't have the richness of sound he wanted. I wanted a rich, rumbly sound but one that wasn't too obnoxious for the neighbors. D&D, Bassani and Samson were all too loud for my taste. Obviously, your mileage may vary a lot in this department.

My Department puts Samson Silver Bullet mufflers on our Road Kings and they have that sound you described, only slightly louder than stock during normal riding, and really loud when you get on the throttle.

But I'd have to say I agree with the advice of taking some time and checking out the bikes at your local dealership. Only problem would be you won't hear what they sound like when you open the throttle up.

Good luck though.

Someone might have already mentioned this, but I think it's worth noting that the sound isn't just the pipes you have. It is also the engine build. When I first put on my Screamin Eagle IIs, I really liked the sound over stock (who wouldn't?). But when I did the heads and cams, the exhaust note became unbelievably awesome.

Personally, I've never herd a bad pipe that was attached to any motor over 100 cu. inches... Hmmmmm:beer:

Screamin' Eagle II's,the old ones, were great for sound AND performance. Too bad you can't get 'em anymore. My buddy's got a set of Pythons on his Train, they're DAMN good sounding, and REALLY crystalize the earwax when he WFO's it. I have a pair of stock pipes with the baffles punched out on my Fatboy, and EVERYBODY complements me on the sound of them;VERY deep and throaty, but not obnoxiously loud!

I wonder what is there on twin pipe systems with the sound i described and good power performance at the same token.
I read there are bad pipes that sound good but can reduce your power out put substantialy. Of course i like to steer away from those.

Great Sound....

[I had some Screamin Eagle ll mufflers with Big City Thunder baffles, on a 2002 Dyna Superglide.....great sound and still good torque. I am going to revamp them and put them on my 2008 Flstc.
Hoping they will sound as good...
