You and about 10,000 other FXR owners that at some point went to forwards and now want to go back to mids. If you had some mids to trade your mailbox would be stuffed by now. Elvis's Place sells sets for around $400 for a nice set. They're getting more and more rare. You can thank the Red and White guys for starting this trend back to mids on their FXR's. There are some around however. Usually from old guys (like myself) with bad knees that can't go back to mids.

I have a set of good Chrome Forward controls on my 1990 FXR I will trade across for a set of factory HARLEY FXR mid controls-

I found mine on Craigslist I called a guy who was selling a FXR with forwards add said he'd throw in the mids. I called teh bike was sold but he still had teh mids. I think I gave him $50.00 for all teh FXR stuff he had left, seats pipes controls etc.

That was one of the must haves when I was shopping for one this summer. The vast majority had forward controls and pipes that wouldn't let you remount the mid's.

IMHO, having mid's is a big benefit on a scooter this light. Makes it handle almost like a Sporty.

 

I agree. I've been happy with my mids. I thought about it but never changed them. I like how I am positioned with the mids for most riding. I can be aggressive with them and what's the sense of owning the best handling big Harley ever made if you are not going to use it's ability. I have a set of foot pegs mounted forward for when I want to stretch out my legs. But I only use them when doing long trips on the highway.

 

I bought my 93 FXR with forwards and did not like them. Put mine back to mids and installed highway pegs. It handles great now. and is way more comfortable to ride. I just don't think the forwards work as well on FXR's. IMO

You can find the parts without spending the big bucks, but you'll have to have patience. I found most on ebay and craigslist. got them pretty cheap.

 

I don't know how anyone can ride very far with mids. Forwards should come standard.

 

I've got 96,000 on my bike using mids. About 2/3 of that has been long distance traveling, many trips to Sturgis and similar. I like having mids and highway pegs. The mids allow me to ride aggressively when I want. The highway pegs allow me to stretch out when I want.

 

How tall are you? Why can't you ride aggressively with forwards? What do you mean by aggressive?

 

I'm a shade under 5'10". By aggressive, I mean very tight twisties at slow to medium speeds where there is a lot of constant upshifting and downshifting. I find mid controls for that and other kinds of shifting better for that for me. I feel out of position for quick shifts with forward controls.

 

Is there a way to have both? Now if the smart guy in the room can come up with that we can have the next billionaire! Have you guyz heard of such a thing? Sort of like having a cage trans that can switch from Auto to stick shift?

 

I guess one can have a system where both are on the bike at the same time but I don't think that is what you mean. It would be ugly for one thing. Any kind of convertible system would mean some wrenching to change it over at the very least.

 

It is a bit of a quandery. When I got my FXR (which I morphed from FXRS to FXRT)it had mid floorboards that were too high for my long legs. No one could tell me a way to lower them, so I got forwards which are much more comfortable. I hear alot of folks saying that mids are much better for FXR than forwards but for me those mids were painful after awhile on the road.Now I found out that they made a set of floorboards that mount lower by bolting to the frame below the pipes and can be adjusted forward and back. At this point I am used to the forwards but would be nice to have those mid boards too so if I can afford it I might get those. Only one I have seen sell them though is Elvis at about $450 a set so not gonna happen any time soon. It would be nice to put lowers on the fairing though and I believe that they don't work with forwards. Any way to make that work?

Im bulding a 1990 FXR that i have had sitting in the corner of my garage for a long time, the bike came with forward controls when i bought it and its just not my style i like the hot rod look of having mids-
I have a couple other things i will be taking off the bike tomorrow to sell off.

The Photos Finally

Here are those photos showing the lack of room when you put dual controls on. Bear in mind when you look at these photos, that I couldn't find the gear lever in amongst the other junk in my shed so I just held the brake lever up where the gear lever would go, and also the fact that I have my forward controls moved up a bit from the stock position for more clearance when cornering.

The problem is with the pipes being in the way. on my bike the brake pedal sits horizontal and across the points cover missing the pegs altogether but I like your set up.

 

I don't mean to barge, but are the fxr foot controls the same for all years?

 

I like this set up.

 

I rode like that for a while and started heel shifting and braking. Changed them out for these. Had to fab the brackets for them. The controls were off of a wrecked out soft tail.

 

Anybody know what cams work best in 92 fxr
