Shopping for the best era stock set of heads to use to send off for porting so I can keep all my original parts in case I would want them with only having 5800 miles.

I scored a real nice set of cylinders on ebay but want to see if I need to be more selective on the heads for my purpose.

I am intentionaly doing this build in 3 or 4 steps just for the fun of it as I enjoy the work and have another bike to ride.

I'm currently doing gear drives, S&S 509 cams and adjustable pushrods, all on order.

The next stage will be a 95" kit and the ported heads.

Final for this summer will be to install the reccommended cams and exhaust to form the package deal from whoever ends up doing my
big bore and head work package so everything matches up as a package deal.

Doing all my own wrench work and I just dig wrenching so please don't give me any grief over needing to do it all at once as I could but just don't want to. Think of it as I will be able to answer all of those questions about what each step done and how it reacted.

My bike is an 02 Road King so no upper stabilizer mounting to be concerned about. I have read a crap load over the last couple of weeks and still cannot tell you is the B motor heads are the same but I think so ?? I know about the valve stem size change and the bee hive springs starting in 95 but what else should I be considering. I guess I need to choose my machinest and ask them but i doubt the answer to my question here varies much.

All stock twin cam heads will bolt on your engine. If however you use 06-up heads you will need 06-up intake manifold flanges ($15 or less). The beehive springs started in 05. B engine heads are the same. As for what years (99-05 or 06-up) are better, is a question best asked to whoever you are having them ported by.

It has been a long time since I had asked any questions on here of a technical nature and you were always a great one for good and straight forward responses, Thanks for taking time to help those with less knowlage.

That is where I am thinking........ I'd still like to hear about 99-05 -vs- 06 up, I'm looking at a super deal on a set of the older heads in great cosmetic condition but afraid to pull the trigger until I find out what is best.

Also a new question I just realized is can ACR's be installed in the older heads ??

if the motor is right, you dont need acr, or any cr. the manual cr are helpful at times (like fuel stops) but not needed.

the 06 heads are much better because of raised ports and 7mm vales. whats a killer deal? tc heads are less than 200 bucks and most real head guys have an exchange program.

like i said, instead of wearing out the keyboard, call bean.

I guess I'll call Bean tomorrow as suggested, I just wanted to try to gain some knowlage from guys here willing to volunteer a bit of their free time and not intrude on his time during his I assume his busy work day, I've been drag racing cars for a couple decades and know how painful telephone time is for shop owners.

Your right on the $200 but the ones I found look like they could be new take off's from a condition standpoint and I like my stuff super clean and nice. most ebay junk has been banged around in storage.

Thanks guys, I'm done here........

If you are going to have the heads ported then it shouldn't make much difference which heads you use. the earlier heads need a little more exhaust work but it is usually worth the extra work as you can make the port the size and shape you need. The cam you chose is for a stock set of heads as bolt in cam. Not sure porting will do much to help that cam. if you are going to get the porting done then use a cam that will benefit the port work. You should really call someone and talk about what you want and how to go about getting the most for the money you spend. JMO dsv

I have used both early and late BigBoyz heads, I especially like the exhaust port Bean does on the early heads and the specific to 2005 only with beehive springs and 7mm valves are my favorite.

Those 509 cams, as I mentioned in my original post are only going to see tHe otherwise stock engine as I am just doing the gear drives and the 509's in this first round. The parts I am chasing is for a round two when we do porting and big bore.

I took some good advice a called Bean this morning and got all the answers I was looking for on the heads, he seemed to like the later model stuff best but with only a little preference and as I felt to good cosmetic condition was every bit as important if you want it pretty when ur done. I'll grab the set I have my eye on today and get it all headed to him in 2 or 3 weeks.

Thanks to all....

The guy who did my heads last winter said, Yes the 06 heads flow better stock but he prefered the 05 and later heads because there was more meat to work with. He also showed me that Harley uses 2 differant companies to cast their heads and he preffered one over the other.
