Hi , I'm new on this site , and a newbie to boot . I own an '06 XL1200C and would like to ask : with punctual , standard maintanance , use of synthetic fluids , and nonabusive operation of my motorcycle , what can I anticipate in terms of miles on the road before I will need to have major work done on the motor or transmission ?

Exactly......I own a Sporty. Some FNGs appear to have reader comprehension problems and can't read the text for what it is. They seem to be reading more into it than there is, then dissecting it and looking for an altercation because deep down they are are insecure. It seems that they are out to prove themselves. I guess that comes along with the territory of being a FNG and what I suspect to be a new Harley owner.
:whatever: ... and there are others that spend more time on the internet bringing their post count into the thousands, than they actually spend out riding- which is probably why you don't know what the hell you're talking about.

It will probably run more miles than you will want to ride it before trading up to a Big Twin. 100k should be no problem.
"Trade up to a Big Twin"... now that's an oxymoron. Did you ever stop and think that perhaps he likes the handling and acceleration of his 1200c, that a "big twin" can't come close to competing with?

Some of you BT owners can really get condescending. I'm not sure if you're compensating for something, or what?

After all, if this guy was worried what you and your BT cronies thought- he could have easily spent the same amount as a brand new '06 1200c, on a used BT. Instead, he bought a reliable, new, pure American muscle bike with a raw attitude. An excellent balance imho.

Get a grip, grasshopper. Nobody was trying to hurt your ego by calling a Sporty a girl's bike........Moving to a Big Twin is a trade up in the Harley line, i.e., bigger, more expensive, maybe a little more plush in ways. This is no different than saying going from a Cavalier to a Cadillac is a trade up in the GM line.

BTW, I have a Sporty. I've had it 13 years. I rode it as an everyday ride for 8 years before I could afford a Big Twin. I do consider moving to a Big Twin a trade up.

IMHO, in the GM line it's more like trading from a Camaro to a LeSabre....both nice cars, just differerent types.
Just cause a Sporty is less money doesn't mean it's less bike.

Anyway, there are examples of Sporties with 100,000 miles on them. It's all in how you take care of it. Probably have to do a top end overhaul in 40000 to 50000 miles. But, stuff like top end work is easy on a Sporty, and not too expensive, so I wouldn't sweat it.

You are comparing your experiences with a 13 year old previous gen Sporty. The '04 and newer 1200c is an entirely different animal. It closed the gap between the Sportster and BT lines. A perfect balance of handling, acceleration, price, etc.

After all, "bigger and more expensive" don't necessarily make something better. Just look at Star Jones...

I own both a Sporty and an E-Glide....completely different bikes....a Harley is a Harley....I don't think any dissing wuz goin on.....?prty:
Well, I like your attitude, and agree with you- except for he can't say that going from a Sporty to a BT is "trading UP" without some of us Sporty owners taking offense. His further attempts to clarify, only threw gas on the fire with equally shallow comments. Let us not forget that this post is in the "Sportster Motorcycle Family" area of this forum.

As the proud owner of a XL1200C Sporty, and someone who doesn't own a Big Twin, I fail to see anything inflammatory in this post. I take "trading up" to mean, if nothing else, more investment of $$$. There's absolutely no reason for flames here. Nobody dissed Sportys.

Well I will tell ya that there are too many to count sport bike owners that would love to differ with ya on this as I do. Not even in the MoCo line can your sugestion be right. The Roadster is a better handling AND cheeper bike then the Custom. Pound per pound dollar for dollar we all know a perfect balance of handling, acceleration, price, etc gose to the ZX10R or was that the GSXR1000?

I want both

I own a new 06 Road King Classic. While at the stealer to I saw a new 1200 Custom in white. I must admit, if I had the money there'd be one in the garage right now. What a great bike - bigger tank, light weight, and great looks! OK, they did have a new Buell Ulysses - I want one of those too - for the off-raod fun.
Different strokes for different folks.
Wish I had the money to own them all. The 1200 is a quick little sucker with great looks to boot.
With proper maintenance, that sporty should last a lifetime.

Cheers,
Dean

Yep, I started with the 1200 Roadster ('04) and just added a used Police Road King to the garage. I love 'em both, for different reasons. I also saw the Ulysses recently. It just reinforced my belief that you really need FOUR bikes to have your needs covered. Yep, I could be happy with four....

lol dude get over it everybody has an opinion and I can promise you will hear it here. for me I love my sportster and im sure the dyna , softtail , and touring bike riders love there bikes . I for one dont like the soft tail models and can give a bunch of reasons to not buy one but im sure there are plenty of people who think other wise or they wouldnt sell them. I payed for my bike with my own money and will ride what I like , now if somebody wants to roll a new ultra glide in my garage and toss me the keys well I guess I could allow a little dissing of my sporty. lol untwist your knickers and go twist the wick on your sporty I can promise that will make everything alright.

Have to support Misterb on this one.

This has nothing to do with Harleys, but more to do with xxflhrci and his opinions.

He did say when you "trade up", not in general terms, but specifically to a big twin. Which I have always found funny because in the world of cruisers a Harley big twin is rather small and both cycles are liter bikes.

Anyway, xxflhrci then proceeded to say "Nobody was trying to hurt your ego by calling a Sporty a girl's bike" when Misterb did not, in fact, say anything about having big twin guys talk about Sportster owners as being girls. That's all you buddy and ya had ta throw that in there.

xxflhrci.......your comments are cute as a button and so subtle....but ya do it on purpose.=devil=

Harleymule, your Sporty will last a long time if you take care of it (maintenance) and don't be afraid to (intelligently) abuse it once in awhile or you'll never really know it's potential and be able to fully enjoy it! (in other words ROMP ON IT!!)

MisterB -

Your point re the "trading up" comment is valid, but in reading through this I really don't think there was any slight intended. A lot of people don't know that the Sporty has been HD's "performance" bike since its inception and that in its heyday was THE bike to own. "Chopped hogs" rode in the back of the pack because they were slow. This notion that Sporty's are lesser bikes reflects genuine ignorance, and we've all been there on something or other. I think a little thicker skin might be a good thing, JMHO. Besides, if someone was truly bashing, you wouldn't have to worry, as the mods would graciously step in with the appropriate wisdom!
