The Sportster was redesigned to include rubber engine mounts and several other changes for the 2004 model year. The frame was stiffened as well, adding about 50 pounds to the weight of the bike. Mine is a 2003, the final year of the more traditional Sporty configuration. I've never ridden a rubber-mounted Sporty so I can't tell you how much different the ride is. I'm told it dampened the vibrations quite a bit, but I can't personally attest to it. All Sportsters went to EFI in the 2007 model year, I believe, so from 2004 through 2006, Sportsters are rubber mounted but run carburetors, not EFI. I'm not sure if that answers your question, but I hope it helps.
