TC88 Upgrade Are Worth It

I’ve recently got around to having all the important things done for reliability on my 2004 TC 88 Road King Custom to be able to ride it without worrying about tensioner failure.

installed:

ThunderMax ECM
Bassani 2 into 2 full duals w 18mm wide band sensors.
Fueling OE+ hydraulic cam plate & tensioners.

now it runs nice and smooth, no backfire and sounds beautiful.

I just bought a set of minty 2008 heads which I’m sending to Hammer Performance for their “Crush” treatment ( ported polished and bigger valves etc)

Once I get the heads back I’ll go for the S&S 98” big bore kit.

WHAT CAM?

I want a cam that pulls from idle to upper midi's. Easy on valve train and max torque and hp but again from idle to upper mid.

I ordered a Woods tw6 which outgunned all other bolt in cams but im now either returning or selling:trading.

I’m one of those guys who can’t live with valve clatter or strange noise. So I’m buying another cam set that has the closest profile to the tw6 - Pulling from idle to about 45-5k rpms. That’s where I ride. I’m mild and not a lane screamer ninja. Long trips at 70-80 mph is as hard as I’m getting on the bike.

Can any experts recommend a cam that pulls from idle to upper mids and is easy on the valve train?

Hammer performance is doing your heads. You might want to ask them what works well with their heads. I ran a Wood TW6G in my 95" 2004 Road King FLHRSI for 40,000 miles or so. It pulled hard from as low RPM as one should open the throttle. You really don't want to make a habit of going wide open from idle. If you want a similar cam that's a bit easier on the valvetrain, an Andrews TW37 would be good.

Thanks Uncle Salty for the reply, much appreciated. The only thing that is a negative on the Woods cams are that they are very hard on the valve train. Sharp ramp angles beat up the valves. I love the bike and want to go easy on it and take care of it. I think this is going to be my last bike, so I want to do what is most reasonable. So, I'm definitely going to be on the mild side in a bolt on cam. Also, with compression. Probably like 9.2 or 9.4 if possible. But yes, I am deferring to Dan's expertise for sure. Thanks for the recommendation on the Andrews TW37, I'm going to look into that one. I'm actually mild on the bike, the off from idle is just to have the torque there so I can occasionally do some hard takeoffs
