Yep. I did use a 3600 on my Sportster once, come to think of it. I like the idea of the longer filter effectively increasing the total oil capacity, but since Champion doesn't list the 3600 as a direct replacement for the OEM filter, I won't be using it on my FXDC.

Damn. Cause I was looking at the 3600 for my Dyna, which the longer filter also holds the Stator plug in place or from coming undone.

I sent our new friend Bob yet another email, and was told this:

David,
The ST3614 would be a equal filter to the chromed Harley filter 63798-99A as long as chrome is not a issue for you. This is a very common filter for several of the newer HarleyDavidson bikes.

You were correct Gary. Sorry for doubting you.....

I would never have posted about the ST3614 without first verifying with Champion that it was in fact a direct replacement for the OEM filter and met Harley's specs.

Be that as it may, I still feel people should use the filter that they are comfortable with, and if that means a genuine Harley filter, then that's what they should use. I only posted about the Super Tech filters to show that there are less expensive alternatives available that meet all Harley OEM requirements.

Not worry.....

less than 40% of your oil goes through the filter anyway.....

Could you explain your statement about 40%? Is this during cold weather start up, or high RPM, or thicker oil, or using the wrong rated oil filter for the application it is being used on, or what? Curious to know where you got that info?

It doesn't matter where he got it because it's total baloney--unless we're talking about a bypass filter, which we aren't. (A modern full-flow filter rarely goes into bypass.)

If you like there is at least one study I just read identifying the Champion Super Tech as an superior felter and exceptable replacment to the stock HD filter. Also found an interesting tid-bit the study stated that the Aimsoil synthetic filter requires more frequent replacments then a comparable non stnthetic filter, although the study went on to say that a stnthetic filted when used with synthetic oil provides the best filtration over non synthetic oil/filters.

Every ST3614 I've ever seen (including the one I'm looking at right now) is clearly marked "Made in USA" on the filter.

Champion does have a production plant in Mexico and some of their filters are made there, but Harley OEM filters and the ST3614 are not.
You mentioned the 3600 that is longer, Does it have the same rating as the 3614? could be the way to go for extra capacity.

I don't know. The Chmapion tech said only the 3614 was the direct replacement for the OEM filter, so that's what I'll use.

At the most you're going to get maybe 1/2 pint extra capacity, so to me it's not worth using a filter that is not spec.

I went and got me the made in usa Super Tech filters today. I wont buy anything made in china, period! From what I could tell the 3600 and 3614 are identical in every way except the 3600 is longer. I went and got the 3600, more for the same money and to me bigger is better.
