Need quieter exhaust 07 FLHRI

07 FLHR
My wife rides a 07 Road king. Currently I'm using a power commander, K+N stg 1 A/C, and 2-1 Supertrapp Exhaust, 21 dics w/ end cap. This is setup according to the PC map for those pipes and A/C. My wife is starting to have hearing loss from the present exhaust, discounted air turbulence; and contribute it mostly from the constant noise from long day rides. We've I've considered to just replace the 2-1 pipes w/ the stock head pipes and mufflers. Is there a mod to the 2-1's, different total system, or mufflers, or just replace w/ stock. Would I loose too much performance If I was to go w/ stock system, and if so; can and should I remove the Powercommander, even keeping the K+N A/C ? The O2 sensors have been caped off w/the present 2-1 system and set up by the PC download.

thanks;

On my '07 Ultra, I ran/run (depending on how I feel) either SE mufflers or the stock mufflers.
I have the Power Commander w/download 812-007. That is the download for my bike with SE mufflers and SE a/c.

Every now and then, I swap back to quiet. I can't tell any loss of power. Sometimes quiet is nice. Especially when thinking about doing a LD ride.

I think you'd be fine to keep everything the way it is and just put the stock mufflers back on.

My O2 sensors are capped like yours (per PC instructions). I still run the Power Commander (since installing in 2008.) I noticed an improvement with the PC. Both when running totally stock and later with the SE muffers and SE a/c. So easy to change the set-ups.

Why don't you just pull some of those discs out? Maybe go down to 15 and try it. That should quiet it down a lot. That's why SuperTrapp made all those muffs like that-to be able to open it up when wanted for less back pressure and more noise or to quiet it down by just adding or taking away discs. A friend of mine has a Supertrapp 2 into 1 exhaust on his bike and it is pretty quiet when he's not on the throttle but when he gets on it the noise goes way up.

As far as stock Harley exhaust performance goes, I think they perform pretty good for normal riding conditions. Some of the good aftermarket systems will give you a significant boost in the mid to upper rpm range but the stock system's extra backpressure actually helps low end power.

How ever you go on this any changes to exhaust may also point to a different map for your Power Commander.

Also the easiest solution for this by far would be for your wife to wear ear plugs when on long trips like Paulie said. I run 'em all the time, even around town. If her helmet leaves her ears exposed to the air blast (like in a half helmet) that will cause ringing and possible permanent damage to the ears. I speak from experience here. With certain ear plugs it quiets the exhaust and air noise but still allows you to hear fairly well.

I'm still working on minor troubleshooting minor problems, but I just installed new Supertrapp baffle and packing 3 times longer than came w/ this pipe back in 2002. I started it and still is loud with 20 discs. If I reduce the # of discs, I'de have to adjust the AFR (air, fuel, ratio), or lean out the fuel mixture, and can easily be done w/ the buttons on the Power commander. The range of performance can be felt by changing the# of discs and running the bike. Can I use a AFR Sniffer inserted in a drilled end cap, and adjust as bike is running? I'm not sure if it should be done under load in gear, as on a dyno. Can the correct AFR. be achieved w/o a dyno run?
if I go to stock exhaust, the only PC map is also using stock air filter. I'm presently using a K+N stg 1 A/F. With the stock exhaust, and using the 15-028-019 map (stock exhaust and A/F), Should I go back to stock A/F? Shouldn't there be enough restriction to use the K+N w/ the stock pipes to run w/ stock map. Is there any advantage to even using the PC3 w/ stock set-up?

You didn't mention which helmet she is wearing. I know it's not "Cool" to wear a full face but it sure cuts down on engine noise, wind noise and it helps keep your head warm in the cold.

Removing some discs should help like it was mentioned. You will need to adjust the PC or it will be lean down low and rich in the upper rpms.

I'd deal with it asap, I live with a hearing loss. I really watch what is happening around me to keep it from getting worse.

I think she will suffer more hearing loss from other bikes than hers. Riding next to or just behind an open exhaust is worse that riding in front of hers.

EAR PLUGS. They will protect from exhaust as well as wind noise.

I let the horse out of the barn before using them, already have constant ringing in my ears, but won't ride anywhere with other bikes or any substantial distance alone without them now. I don't want any further damage.

Hey Ninjaboy

I really can't say much about the maps in your EFI cuz I'm mainly a carb fan. I'm sure a lot of EFI gurus could give a more informed answer than I could. However, I'm a big fan of the "try it and see what happens" school of thought as long as you don't do any damage. OK, so If I were in your shoes I would try pulling some of those discs and just see how it runs. If it runs OK I would do some plug readings to see what color I end up with.

To me it seems you're a bit hung up on using the right recommended map. The guys I know that have shops and play around the the Power Commanders a lot tell me that canned maps don't always do the job perfectly and they often have to tweek the maps on a laptop. They've also told me that the late model OEM EFI systems can self adjust to minor changes like you're doing. I realize what I'm saying here about EFI is, at best, second hand knowledge and is of limited use here, but reading plugs is based on years of old school hands on knowledge. I'd love to be able to use a Wide Band AFR sniffer to get the mix perfect but plug checks are still a viable and decent way to go.

Whether or not the Power Commander is of any benefit on a pretty much stock engine I really can't say for sure but, if it allows you to richen up the AF a bit, that'll cool things down a bit and that is good.

Good Luck Dude
