Langlitz Leathers Columbia Jacket

Thanks to the forum members who advised me that Langlitz jackets were the best, or at least tied with Vanson . I was wearing a terrorist (Pakastani) jacket lately due to being a size 66 portly and not being able to find anything else. That jacket was buffalo, cheap and looked it too, although I think it was fairly tough and may have survived one fall.

I just discovered what true luxury is in a leather . 15 minutes ago I took delivery of a goatskin Langlitz Columbia jacket. Made to my measurements of course. I'm in Michigan and they are in Portland, Or. It only took 3 weeks after I faxed the order form . I specified goat after much debate and discussion. The medium weight cowhide sample was gorgeous but I wanted something more supple and light. The goat is still durable, actually stronger than cow of equal thinkness, and more waterproof ! It feels like an old friend from the first wearing. I basically took their stock Columbia jacket, but specified a few extras like a leather lined gun pocket, leather lined hand pockets, sewn down epualets, and no waist belt.

The most amazing thing is the perfect fit. I'm rarely satisfied in that department, and this fits like, well, like it was made for me :)) . I notice that it's fits BEST in the riding position, like it should ! Not that the fit is lacking walking around, but it can't be perfect in both applications, and apparently they know how to make minor adjustments so you will be best served when riding. Frankly, at their prices it HAS to be perfect. They offer a money back guarantee but I can see I'll never need it.

Anyway, my highest endorsement to Langlitz. Neil Young bought two for all his band members, one lightweight and one heavy. Bruce Springsteen has three. I have one, and it's PERFECT :D ...Tom

Tom, you got the best jacket made. The company story is great isn't it?

I got my package yesterday in the mail with my new jacket and pants!

Two years ago I bought my first Langlitz jacket and like you after lots of debate I was convinced to order the goathide. But these last two years I just did not like it at all. The contruction and design however are top notch. There is no better! It's just I ride a lot of miles everyday and don't use a windsheild. I may have measured mine too large also.
I kept in touch with Dave at Langlitz telling him of my flapping collars, the back flapping in the wind and the elbows bunching up on me. Others may not be bothered by this or not have the problems. He recommned I send it back and he make me a new one. I didn't like this cause it was my mistake in selecting the goathide rather than cowhide. Well this year I was driving up to the Seattle area and stopped in the shop to discuss with him what I could do about the collars slapping me in the chin on the road.
He took my jacket (two years old now) and pulled out a new order form and started measuring me for a new coat.
I got medium cowhide and while it is very stiff and is going to require some breakin period I just love it. It's also smaller than my other one so I did over measure myself. Again the construction, design and material are first rate.
Because of this fine customer service I had Dave make me a pair of jean style pants and they fit great also.

Lanlitz is one fine company and I would recommend them to all.

Ray

Not only are they a fine company, they warranty they workmanship for life. A friend had one for over 10 years and had it rebuilt with all new zippers, snapps and lining for only about $100. It should last him another 10 or so years now. Their leather conditionaer is all I use on my coats and pants.

Ray,

It's encouraging to hear that Dave did the right thing by you. I'm hoping that being so far away mine is perfect as is. My collar snaps down. I wonder if you had a different style ? So far, the fit on mine seems to be spot on !

The old fashioned customer service they offer is hard to find nowadays. My local leather expert who has many brands of jackets in his store (2nd generation leather merchant) told me that Langlitz's guarantee was absolute. They don't hesitate to make you another garment if yours doesn't work. Frankly, at the price they charge I think it should be that way, but it's a rare thing nowadays.

Langlitz has my future business...Tom

I picked up a set of Langlitz goatskin pants on ebay for $200 and they fit great!
I'm just tickled pink as retail is about $800
The jackets turn up there pretty often on ebay in regular sizes and even some extra small & large.
The pants I got were from a guy with an "in" at Langlitz.
He gets the reconditioned and overstock stuff that has been there too long and ebays it all.

I was lucky since he's also in Portland and I'm only 40 miles from there so I was able to go pick them up.
Great leathers and I know you'll enjoy them for a lifetime.

Hello:
I saw your post. I took my measurements today and wanted to order the Westerns. Would heavy leather be too much? I am happy to spend a lot of time on break in for something tough.

I would think that is a little to much but you need to get what YOU want so you will be happy. I got mine in light and they are still pretty thick so maybe medium will work for you. But, call Dave and ask him as they are the experts. Also, you may want to ask if he will send you a sample pair to try on then you can judge for yourself.
My jacket is medium and is taking some time to break in but I think it is just fine. The goatskin didn't work for me but does for a lot of others.
Bottom line is you will love the construction and design!!!!

It's mentioned above in my first post. It was to light/thin and bunched up at the elbows, collars snapped at my chin, back flapped and I probably sized myself to large. I don't ride with a windshield which may prevent some of these problems. But I do ride 100 miles a day so it was an everyday problem!!
My new cowhide one doesn't have any of those problems now and it fits better. But I had them fit me in their shop while passing through Portland.
There garantee is the best in the business.

well this thread prompted me to order one , it was very tempting to over measure so i hope i didnt ,my friend measured with a fingertip under the tape cause thats the only way he could hold it , it was snug but able to slide sideways but not loose enough to slide up and down , is that how they did it ? i also had him do it on 2 different days and split the small differences he made in some of the measurements ,,i ordered a medium fit in medium cowhide
thanks

I hope I'm not being redundant, but I too had a hard time deciding on the type of leather to order. I'm usually too warm, slightly damp if not sweating in a leather. I told Dave about this and he thought that even the medium cowhide would be too heavy for me. This is compounded by the weight and size of a jacket for me (I'm a 66"). He told me that he really thought I'd be happy with goatskin and sent me some samples (light cow, medium cow, goat). He thought that the light cow would not offer enough protection. Goatskin, although very supple right from the start, is stronger than cowhide of equal thickness.

Well, after looking at the samples, and talking to Dave again, I ordered goat as I described in my initial post. I just want to say that now I've had the jacket for almost 2 months. I'm convinced that for me, goatskin was the right decision. Everytime I put it on I smile, just like I do everytime I climb on the Road King :)...Tom

I picked mine up Thursday and went on a four day ride Friday. I went with the regular cow hide and it's heavy as hell, but I've never been happier with a jacket before. There's nothing that compares to having a properly fitted jacket when riding.
When I picked up the coat it was really stiff and I asked about a good way to break it in quickly. They told me to throw it in the dryer for 30 minutes without heat. Then put the treatment on it. The dryer trick worked really well.

no sh*t ? the thought about the dryer went thru my head but i thought for sure it would mess it up
i kinda figured it would be like a baseball mitt when we were kids ,,, just go sit on a curb and start working it
i actually stood mine up in the corner
its medium cow skin and there is absolutly no way i could wear it for any length of time the way it is now
i wont need it till september

Langlitz

When you guys talk about the price of a quality leather jacket like Langlitz you forget about all the shiny chrome stuff that you (and me) hang on your bike that will never do you you any good if you take a spill. If you've ever been in an accident you know what leather can do for you, not some cheap made in China jacket but something good, you get what you pay for. I wear a heavyweight cowhide Langlitz jacket and Langlitz goatskin jeans, my brother has a vintage Vanson that is excellent quality also. Langlitz has the BEST guarantee period! Call and talk to Dave (the owner), he told me to wear my new jacket for 6 months and if I wasn't happy he would refund my money or make me a new one, the absolute best company I've ever dealt with!

I have owned a Langlitz jacket and pant set since 2001 and I only wish I had ordered a set sooner! I live on the West Coast but have I have ridden back to Colorado five times wearing the Langlitz leathers in every type of weather possible and they are great. The function and fit are second to none in my opinion. I had owned several other makes through the years and custom quality leather is worth every penny. The customer service is like going back in history. If money is a hurdle do some hunting on ebay, if the size is right you can get some great deals there.

Beck's Noreaster in Horsehide. Had one for years and finally out grew it. I hve owned alot of leathers through the years and without a doubt the finest, toughest jacket made. You can still get them through Legendary leathers but not in my size unforturnately. You had to wear it though and Lexol it alot to break it in. You couldn't stab through the damn thing and I am thankful for that, at least one time I was thankful for that fact. keepem sharp

PS I currently interchange between a Branded jacket made in the USA and UNIK Ultra made in India. The UNIK is a very heavy excellant jacket. Leather lined pockets too so I can carry my .45 in the inside pocket. You know when you put it on too, as I gain about 10 lbs due to the weight of the jacket.

Time to revise the thread.

Earlier this year I flew to Portland for the sole purpose of being measured for a new set of leathers & boots.

Just received my custom-made goatskin summer breaches to match the summer weight goatskin jacket. The best motorcycle leathers available! (Sorry- Vanson & Fox Creek fans but they just don't match up to custom hand made leathers.)

By the way, at the same time I was measured by Langlitz, took a trip to Wesco in Scapoose for custom made boots. (Sorry- Red Wing fans but they just don't match up to custom hand made boots.)

You'll pay a good bit for it but there isn't a better made jacket or boots out there. No offense but unless you've ever had custom made clothes (a bad habit picked up years ago living in NYC) you just wouldn't understand the difference.

just got the call that my new Columbia jacket is ready to pick up. It's a replacement for one that was stolen from my home. I placed my order back in 1978 for my first set of leathers and have to say my pants and ya that stolen jacket are or where in perfect condition after so many years. those of you thinking the cow skin is just to stiff, wow they break in fast and I rarely climb out of my pants. In 78 a set of pants and jacket ran around $800, now the set is around $2000. seems a lot but they will be the last set of leathers you will need , unless some one rips them off. well worth the investment.
