How to remove stock grips?

Ok, I did a search on this and I found this...

I'm going to have to loosen the throttle cable, and then take off the switch housing.

After I'm done, I need to put the throttle cable back, or re-adjust it. I don't have the service manual nor did my new grips come with any instructions, so does anyone know of online instructions for this?

The rest of the instructions was pretty much to use wd40 and work it off...so I hope that's not going to be a problem.

Thanks again.

just put a set of heated grips on my RK,

I took the stockers off with a good sharp boot knife and patience, and the occasional pair of needlenose pliers. The left one you have to whittle off, its glued on real good. The right one, I left the throttle all assembled and on, but there's a little ridge on the inboard end of the grip that runs in a groove in the switchhousing. I picked away at it with the knife point and yanked bits and pieces out with the pliers. To put the new grips on, shot some wd-40 down them, and used a large rubber mallet to thump on the outboard end once I'd got them as far as I could by hand. Works just great, but be sure the surface of your mallet is clean, especially if your grips have chrome ends. If the grips are a tad loose, use Barge Cement (that's a brand name) from a shop that caters to leather workers (hobbyists or shoemakers) or 3M weatherstrip cement. If you haven't got a rubber mallet, I've used a boot heel in the past, but that's getting really rude. A singlejack against a piece of wood resting on the grip end works, too.

Have fun

On the brake lever, make sure you place a thick cardboard insert between the lever and the lever bracket, may damage the stoplight switch plunger and rubber boot without the insert.

If it's stock, the left grip is glued on, it has to be cut off. This is for a 2003 Fatboy, but I would guess it's the same for all Harleys.
My new grips came with a special glue to install the new left one. The right one comes off once the switch housing is taken apart, goes back together the same.
Good luck.

All done....new question/concern though.

Now that the right grip is back on....it has more play. The wire that opens the throttle is fine....but the wire that closes the throttle (rotate forward) is a bit long I believe. It's not as smooth as it was originally. Is there an easy way to fix this?

And what does the throttle screw actually do? What does it physically do when you turn and and what does that cause the bike to do overall?

Thanks.

Sounds like you need to readjust the throttle return cable. Look for a rubber boot about 3-4" from the right grip. Peel it back a bit and an adjusting nut will be exposed. To take up any slack in the cable "loosen" the nut (counter clockwise). I'm guessing you're refering to the screw under the switch housing - it's a cheap cruise control.

Here's a copy of the PM I sent to Kiko...I started thinking about it and decided it would be better to share the info,

New grips
I don't know of any online manual, but it's not hard to do. If you read my posts under the Dyna Forum, it kind of spells out what I did...especially with the throttle cable adjustments. The left grip is real easy to do. The right ones a little trickier. Just take your time and go slow with it and you shouldn't have any problems. I just thought of something....
try this...the instructions should be the same no matter whose grips you put on.
