ECM compatibility

Not sure if I am psoting this in the correct forum but I have a question about Engine Control Module Compatibilty on my 06 Ultra Classic Electra Glide.

My bike came with ECM 32852-06 installed. The Factory Service Manual calls for 32534-05A. I recently got a 32498-05 and was wondering if it would work if I needed a backup. I did want to plug it in and see if it would work but I was afraid it may mess something up.

Any information or opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Dave

An engine is an engine is an engine. Unless the speedo has the VIN recorded in it....where would the ECM inquire to find out the particular bikes VIN. Unless HD installs some memory chip somewhere in the frame and electrically ties it to the ECM...there is no way the ecm would know it is not on just another Harley. Now, whether that particular ECM will work with his bike....depends on what feedback it is looking for from all the different sensors/speedo. If his bikes wiring harness has all the inputs the ECM is looking for and the parameters match the parameters expected....the ECM should not have a problem. I think HD programs the VIN into the ECM at the factory to allow their diagnostic program/computer to keep track of history/codes/etc.

If he was to buy this and do as you said, the SERT would not work as it is looking for the original VIN. He should just be able to install the ECM and use it without a problem and the SERT should work fine. The ECM is basically a computer.....it will only do what is programming tells it to do based on input that flows over the bus.
