I just noticed online that the Jim's 1707 /V-twin/etc Cleve block tool is two standard machine tool T-slot clamp nuts and one stud yet sells for as much or more than the full kit of step blocks so might as well get (much) more for the same or less $$.
The coupling nuts in the kit let you add studs for extra length should you need to pull an overly wide spread back into position.
They were instantly recognizable and now I feel a bit silly for cutting allthread the last time while my nuts were staring me in the face.
HF sets are typical of the ancient style: https://www.harborfreight.com/58-piece-combination-step...
Every shop has uses for these with or without a milling machine. I also use them to clamp weldments (spray with MIG nozzle spooge or wipe with Vaseline which is the same thing but thicker). Step block clamps rock for jobs like holding an inner primary cover to your welding table so it remains straight instead of becoming a pretzel.
