Maybe wind in the microphone.

 

yep, you listed everything but the mic. I would try that next. But if works good setting still, it sounds like a loose connection somewhere. Maybe a loose solder joint on the board in the radio itself...not uncommon in some radios. Maybe just the mic cord. I would also check all antenna connections.

 

Try some of the electrical connections spray or the grease that you can buy at Radio Shack and apply to the cable connections and on the bike connection. Sometimes it works wonders.

 

Multiple MICs have been tried. Only things that are still original are the Coax cable and the antenna mount on the tour pak.

The strange thing is that this issue has been going on since the bike was brand new. Dealer techs "cant find anything wrong".

Going back to the "10-4 Good Buddy" days I remember using a SWR meter to calibrate the match on the antenna. You might try a radio shop to see if they still have a meter. If I remember correctly you can adjust the mast in the antenna to get a good match so that send and recieve signals are equal.

 

In my experience you are not going to have a reliable signal for a 3 mile range on any motorcyle CB while you are on the road. You are just lucky to be able to do this while the Bike is standing still. I still think your problem is in the mike cord.

 

I'm leaning more to a loose solder joint on the board. I am not a tech, but I have fixed several cb radios and a couple TVs by finding loose solder connections on the boards and re-soldering them. Very common problem with chinese made electronics.

 

Plan B. Have you tried your cord and headset on a buddy's bike and then let your buddy use his cord and headset on your bike to see what happens. That should tell you if it is CB or mike/headset issues. I feel your frustration, because I have an 06 Ultra and had to replace my CB early on (just after warranty expires). Another time I found a loose connection between ear speaker and mike where the wires plugged together. I know it can drive you crazy but hang it there you will find the problem. Good Luck

 

How about the ptt button?? Maybe you need to check the wiring in that little switch. If you have done any handlebar work, the little wires can get pinched sometimes. Of course, I don't know where your ptt is located, but most are on the left side of the bar. Have you tried a handheld mic just for grins??

 

Spoke to Clay. His quick diagnosis is bad Ground on the antenna.

Replaced the copper wire with Radio grounding strap (Braid) and it has seemed to improve the issue. Since this bike is in Virginia, Im waiting to hear the final results..

Hope that is what it is. Since you said you replaced and checked the antenna in your first post, I skipped right over that possible cause of your problem. After re-reading your first post, I see you replaced the radio too. So much for my diagnosis! Must have been late when I read it!
