Andrews 37 cams

I am not a good or lousy cam guy. There are good and wrong cam specs, and some are suited to the other parts and setup parameters. Andrews grinds most of them for the other vendors. When the TW37 was popular, it was a great cam with 95", 10:1, Ported heads with a 1.9 intake and stock exhaust valve, and a lot of work on the exhaust side. 100/105 was typical. The TW57 has sidelined it and works better but with added changes. When you propose a group of cams that are essentially the same duration, lift, and just the lobe centers are moved, changes are just nuanced, not much difference. The more popular and effective later grinds have utilized Andrews PS higher intensity lobes and higher lift. Comp (screaming eagle) but not S&S have made similar lobe geometry improvements. Now the big elephant in the room. The stock heads have springs and retainers that limit lift to .530". Fix that, and you still have heads that flow 220cfm intake and stop increasing, flatline, at .400" lift. This made the .500" lift cams essential, including longer ones like the SE211, TW44, TW55, and TW50. The object was to crutch the limited heads. Fix the constrained heads, and now the possibilities open up. With good heads, a wider LSA cam becomes appropriate and is much smoother at lower speeds due to less overlap. They do, however, make great power when coupled to the right mating parts. At about 100hp, the carb becomes a restraint. With hot rodding, there will always be something in the way of more power and torque, including budget.
