I have a Ruger No. 1 in 45-70 Govt. That's .458" cal. 500 gr. bullets, and topping out at circa 1,100 fps.

Then, because I like the Ruger No. 1, I found a "Tropical" in .458 Win Mag. That's 500 gr. bullets, .458" cal. and circa 2,200 fps.

It's one of the most popular caliber in Africa for the "Big Five" dangerous game:

African Elephant, Black Rhino, Cape Buffalo, Lion, Leopard.

Nominal recoil on a 30-06 Spfd. is 20 ft. lbs.

Recoil for the 45-70 Govt. is about 45 ft. lbs.

Recoil for the .458 Win Mag runs in the realm of 95 ft. lbs.

I like big bikes, big guns. And I'm a recoil junkie. I like to get pushed around when I touch one off.

Largest caliber in my handguns would be a 1911-style Kimber Eclipse Pro II in .45 ACP and a Colt Anaconda revolver in .44 Magnum. The latter offers enough recoil for me.

My father left my the most powerful rifle I have, an older Weatherby Mark V chambered in 460 Magnum. I have fired it three times in my life, I doubt I will fire it very many times as it is expensive and somewhat painful.

450-577 would be the largest bore @.465

338-378 would be the most powerful. Personally, I don't care to be abused when drop the hammer, so it has a brake.

We're working on a site for storing photos. Photo Bucket is worthless.

Ruger No. 1 Tropical, .458 Win Mag.

500 gr. bullet impact on dirt banking. That's a foot long ruler.

Here's the .458 Win. Mag. -- 500 gr. Interlock bullet.

For handguns I have a Ruger New Super Blackhawk, 44 mag. 10.5" bbl. And a Smith & Wesson Mod. 629, 44 mag. These purchased before Smith came out with the .500 whatever.

I have not use whatever for the .500 cal. (Or .460 Casull) in a handgun.

The magnum handguns couple up with a Marlin 1894S 10 rd. capacity, lever carbine in the same caliber. Locally these are called "the ******* assault rifle."

I should get some photos.

I've wanted an "elephant gun" since I first heard about them, circa 1957 and I was nine years old. Now I own one.

People locally ask me, "Lots of elephant in your neck of the woods?'

"Not since I got this here elephant gun . . . " :redrolf:

I once had a Merkel double rifle in 470 NE. I now have a Dakota 76 in .416 Rigby and 375 H&H. And I also have a Shiloh Sharps in 45-110 as well as a chopped Marlin lever gun in 45-70. The big guns aren't too bad to shoot as long as you pull them in tight and don't give them a running start at your shoulder. The .470 NE would knock my glasses off everytime I dropped the hammer. One of the reasons why I sold it.

I once shot a .458 Winchester mag that some 350 lb guy was shooting at the range with his specially made, enhanced reloads. As soon as I dropped the hammer everything went black followed with a flash of bright light while I ended up dancing backwards on my right foot trying to keep myself from falling over. His 350 lb frame absorbed the recoil pretty good. Not so much for my 150 lb frame. One shot was enough for me.
