That is the extended warranty and is an option. The first year is free. After that under the extended you will have a $50 deductable.

The worth of the extended is debateable. I do know if you never use it you get the bucks back and it is supposed to be transferable. That could make it a good selling point so you just have to decide this one based on your experience as a wrench, and future plans for the bike.

Jimmy, I was at my local H-D yesterday, and I just happened to ask
about the warranty that I bought with my scoot (7 yr. extended).
I was told that it IS NOT transferable. Not sure if that was BS or it thats fact. Ya got me wonderin'!
I think its worth it, because if ya have some major issue with the scoot,
its covered for $50. If ya have minor stuff, its probably better not to use the warranty and get your money back after 7 years.

I would think the warranty is transferable, so maybe the guy that told
me otherwise didn't really know? I hope so.. That's lame if ya can't sell it with your scoot.

Well when I had mine it was in 2000. Things may have changed so YES I agree, the terms and conditions should be clearly understood and in writing.

I bought 3 year coverage last December on a used FXSTB. It is transferable, there are several paragraphs on this subject in the coverage papers. I was taken for $1090 on a three year extended warranty for the used bike, the 5 year for my new one cost $879. This is negotiable with the dealer, they sell it and you can also cancel it and get back a prorated amount. This too comes back from the dealer. Same thing with GAP insurance.

Not trying to say the obvious, but I have done tax consulting for several major manufacturers over the years regarding extended warranties (Toyota, Honda, Nissan). If you read the contract it will tell you the absolute obligations of the warranter (which may be the Motor Company, or more likely is an insurance co owned or controlled by the Motor Co).

Its probably a little more complex, however, since extended warranties are dealer issued and the dealer pockets a high % of the$1400 premium up front (probably 50-60%). Accordingly, the transferability may be something not specified (and therefore not guaranteed) in the contract, but still honored by a specific dealer (would make good business sense in many cases).

I went without the extended warranty on my new bike. I use to be an auto mechanic. I still learning motorcycles, but I figure I should be able to fix most things that go wrong. Also, it seems like a lot of modifications I may do could void the warranty. So, whats the point. I figure if there is any factory defects they will hopefully show in the first year. Im hoping that as long as I maintain and take care of my bike I won't have problem (crossing my fingers).

I purchased a 5 year extended warranty and after thinking about it, a while, and having the electrical, parts and shop manuals; I told the dealer I'd like to drop it and all I needed to do was come in and sign a paper. I did that, no problems.

But it's like any insurance, you are betting it will have major problem and the insurance company’s betting it won't or will be able to get out of covering it in some way.

My warranty would have been transferable but no re-fund after 5 years if you don't use it that was the old way they did it.

Also.....be careful on how long it takes you to decide. You have 90days to get it before an additional $90 is added. And what I didn't know and no dealer ever told me.....their is a mileage requirement along with the 90 days. So you have 90 days and 2000 miles before the additional $90 kicks in. Really no big deal since you already spent way too much $ but it caught me by surprise.

I guess the dealers don't tell you because they figure you didn't buy the bike to ride. I was planning on getting one of the warranties after Sturgis but I had 8500 miles at 90 days. Oh well, now I have up to a year to decide if I really want one.

I know this is an old thread but I have a few questions about extended warranties. My Stealer actually tried to NOT sell me an extended warranty. Imagine that!!! Says that the new TC88's are so well built that it would be a waste of money. Wants me to put the $$$ into bike goodies instead. I know that there has been a lot of new technology put into the manufacture of the 2003 line but I'm still leery of the high cost of rebuild if something goes to hell. Has anyone had any problems with 2002 or 2003 bikes that might tend to suck your wallet dry without the extended warranty?

Believe it or not I just used mine two weeks ago. Took the ‘00 Night Train in for the 15K and
the dealer called me wanting to replace the primary seal and rocker seals. First asked if I had the
extended warranty then suggested they go ahead with it. Cost $50 for both and save me over
$300 in parts and labor.

I don’t feel it’s the mechanical that will get you, its all the electronics and computers on-board
these days that go.

The extended warranty is nothing but an insurance policy. If you use it 2 - 3 time over the time
covered you probably covered your costs. Its also negotiable on price. There are other private
companies that will cover these repair costs. Several will cover EFI starting in January. To give
you the difference, I paid $300 less for a 5 year from my current dealer on the FL then on a 3 year from
Famous Mikes on the FX. Buyer beware!

hezgon, Is the price negotiable to the Stealer? They didn't tell me that! What would be a fair price to start with? 20% off? 15% off? The longer the term, the higher the break?

45,000 miles in two years and mine has paid for itself already, and I still have three years to go.

Stator
Throttle position sensor
idle motor
temperature sensor
intake seals
air box backing plate
a few misc things.
these were all under extended warrantee and done at the same time, I had a lot of cosmetic stuff done on the original warrantee.
front fender
mirrors
seat
driver backrest
saddlebag lids
passenger peg mounts
clutch cable
gas tank center decorative piece

overall the bike and dealership has been good to me but the chrome is junk unless you don't ride it.

Cromagnum, I came to this conclusion when the dealer gave me one price and I started talking about how I could get a longer term with a lower rate with an after market company. They than dropped the price to about $80 over the after market cost. This type of insurance is where big commissions are made. From bike to computers every one wants to sell you an extended warranty.

hezgon, THANX. Bros like you help all of us save much $$$. This info will hopefully sway the Stealer to my level of $$$ comfort. I will call on the 60 mo. warranty gold just for chits and giggles. And to talk about E.F.I..
