I personally haven't heard of any. Check it out with a multi-meter set on DC. Remove seat, start engine, put meter on + and - posts and slowly run the RPM's up to where you were seeing 16V. If you don't see it on the multi-meter, then your indash meter is bad or maybe has a bad connection. If you do see 16V on the multi-meter, you've got a stator or regulator problem.
Until this morning (30 Sep) mine pegged at 16 also. This morning it stayed in the 13-14 range. Same as you, no smell from the battery. I haven't done the multi-meter test, I'm due for the 1000 check in a short (less the 200) so I'll have them check it then. If they say no problem with in-dash gauge or system, then I'll do some testing then to confirm.
