Unscientific but interesting oil temp study

Just ran an interesting test on the oil temps on my ride. I've read the threads, talked with techs and tried to get a decent handle on the need for oil cooling and oil comparisons.
Here's what I found-
Running 20/50 HD dino - 90 degree day - ten miles at 70 mph.....oil temp was 276 degrees

Next day - Switched to 20/50 syn3 - 90 degree day - 10 miles at 70 mph...oil temp was 251 degrees

Next run - Added HD oil cooler - 92 degree day - 10 miles at 70 mph...oil temp was 236 degrees.

Only difference was the bottle of Moose Drool (Big Sky Brewing Company) riding on my handlebars. Yeah, we can ride with an open container in Montana legally. Eat your hearts out boys!!!

My comparison might not come up with the same results as everyone else, but I thought it was definetely informative.

Oh yeah, no trailer on for the tests.

Wow, only 15 degrees cooler with the oil cooler  Does not seam like much of a difference.

Yeah, I change oil and filter at 50mi w/ HD oil; 500 and 1000mi w/ Mobil1 20-50, and my stealer tells me my warranty is screwed.....even if one of my bags fall off.....lol. NOTHING BEATS MOBIL1 Want to see a 91 model Chevy with 700k miles that doesn't use a drop between changes?

Yup GR8FUL-no wind variation although I did run into a bunch of f#$%ing bugs on day 2. Might have created a bit more weight and therefore increased drag and therefore increased temp a little.
MARCUDA- I agree, didn't seem to make a huge differnce although I was most concerned about temps when pulling our loaded trailer uphill. Hoping it makes a big difference there.

Hi, Jim:
I thought I would post here as I could not figure out how to PM you with a picture attached so
Here is a picture of the Sears lift. Was $119. Definitely, get one. I can change all the fluids with no problem. Some fluids require a 2 lb. coffee can which works great.

I would be more interested to see the differance in city temps more then highway. Remember these are air cooled engines. 70 mph, lots of airflow over the entire bike. I think the oil cooler would be for more city driving benafit than highway. IMPO

Actually, the oil cooler wouldn't be doing much of anything in city driving. It uses air blowing through it to cool the oil. Like a radiator on a car. Harley sells a fan gizmo that attaches to the area between the cylinders to blow air over the fins for city driving. No idea how well it works though.

No one else thinks those temps are REALLY HIGH? After only 10 miles a TC hits 276 degrees? My Evo with dino oil and no oil cooler wouldn't even hit 215 in a longer test.
90 degree air still has a lot of cooling power, being over a hundred degrees cooler than a warmed up engine. Do baggers run that much hotter because the engine is protected too much?
I just find those numbers incredible.

MPZ......actually you would expect the TC88 to
be a higher temp than the Evo. Most people
make the assumption you did, that if the oil
temp is higher that the engine is also higher.
Not true....the difference is the TC88 is much
more efficient in cooling down the engine...
therefore the oil temp (due to the direct
spray cooling set up) is much higher due
to the excess heat being removed directly
from the engine case. This was proven in
a test with 6 temp. probes place in the engines
of TC88 and Evo and compared on a graph.
The oil temp is lower in the Evo but the
engine temp is lower in the TC88.

DEPUTY......you hit the nail on the head with
the comment on the oil cooler in town. I hear
people say all the time that they ride to work
in town and during rush hour are getting
too hot....the oil cooler will not help, but like
Deputy said the fan set up will. I say just
change to syn and change more often and
you will be fine.

DEEBO......I changed to Mobile 1 Vtwin also....
screw the dealership....I wanna use whats
best and Im pretty confident that Harley is
more interested in making money that concerned
with having the best quality oil available. Will
HD syn3 work......Im sure it will, they arent
stupid enough to give us something that wont
meet the minimum standards for operation but
Im not happy with minimum. Mobile 1 is IMHO
one of the best if not THE best.

I personally use Mobile 1 V-twin in the crank
case.......Red Line gear oil in the trans.....and
standard primary case oil in the primary.

Another twist,
I added an oil cooler 3 weeks ago and it knocked down my temps about ~20-25 deg.
Although certainly not as efficient standing still as highway speed, there is a nominal amount of cooling happening stalled in traffic. It's called convection.

oil temps

is there a real teck

that knows the operating temp. of oil

on a t/c 88

there must be some one that knows the factory specs
if there is such a thing on oil temps

it would be interesting to know

ridin like hell onfire

I checked the temperature of the oil entering the oil cooler, and the temperature leaving the oil cooler in my garage (NO air flow across the cooler), and the temperature of the oil leaving the cooler was 10.7 degrees cooler. To me, that's worth it.

The oil temp does indicate engine heat, it's the engine that heats up the oil. One place where the TC runs cooler is the piston, since the TC squirts oil directly on the bottom to cool them. Unfortunately, this heats up the oil so it doesn't do as good a job cooling the rest of the engine. And piston heat was never a problem on Evos anyway, so in "fixing" a problem that wasn't a problem in the first place, Harley created an engine that runs hot.
And oil coolers do help somewhat in traffic because there is an extra area for heat to escape by radiation.

"I hear a lot of talk about oil temp being bad in the TC88 but I never hear one blowing up because of high oil temp. Just keep the oil changed and ride the damn thing. I got 30,000 on mine and never had a problem."

I agree completely with both of these remarks. Sure glad there is synthetic oil. (Almost wish I hadn.t got the damm temp guage (LOL).

BladeGrip: Did you do the cam bearing modifications to your bike or were you exempt from that problem?

BladeGrip: Sorry to be a pest. Did you take it in or did you develop problems and then take it in? I understand Harley won't do the fix unless things are going bad. Reason I ask is I have 5000 miles on my '99 and I don't think the mod was made to it. I bought it used so no way of knowig for sure if it was brought in or not. I'd hate to be somewhere and have it start going bad and grind all the guts up.
