I have a 2011 Limited, never use the compartments in the tops of the lowers and would like to add speakers. HD and others make them but my bike came with the rear speakers and of course two in the batwing upper fairing. The HD catalog shows speakers and says the radio has plugs for two additional but those are already used i would think for the rear ones. Can I add speakers easily? I have an email in to J&M but have not heard back yet. I don't wish to change my radio nor add some expensive amp either. Any ideas would be helpful. Mike

I used Polk Spkrs

I also never used the small compartments, so it was a no brainer. I bought the compartments & HD grill covers. I got a super deal on Polk 6.5"" Dxi speakers through Crutchfieds, so went that route. Since I have a Sony after-market head unit, these worked great. I run Hogtunes in the fairing and these Polk will blow them away. But all in all, my system now sounds just like I like. No problem cruising at 75 and jamming. I bought the HD grill covers also but I liked the looks of the Polk covers so I never opened the HD ones, even after waiting 3 weeks for them due to back ordered. If you want a good deal on the HD grill covers let me know. I have 2 that have never been used.

You're right to be concerned about the lack of an audio output from the radio to use with speakers in the vented lowers. You can send your radio to Iron Cross Audio and have two or four additonal outputs added; these will be pre-amp outputs that are independent of the current wiring on your bike which use speaker-level outputs (i.e. signals from the radio that come after the signal has been amplified by the radio's internal amp):

In addition to J&M, Hogtunes offers a kit that is compatible with the Ultra, and includes a modestly priced amp to drive the speakers in the lowers.

I mention the amp because w/o an amp, speakers in the lowers is a waste of money IMO; unless you're parked, you won't hear them.

In addition to the J&M, Hogtunes, and HD vented speaker kits, another alternative is to use the speaker boxes HD uses on the '11 and '12 CVO Street Glides--these simply replace the glove boxes currently on your bike. Here's a thread explaining how this is done:
