I bought a new starter (1.6kw) and was starting to put it on when I pulled the outer primary on my 2003 fatboy only to discover that the several of the teeth on the ring gear were sheared off. That sux......of course H-D sells a new clutch shell for $300+. I was figuring I could drill out the pressed rivots that hold the ring gear in place on the clutch shell and find just a new ring gear and drill and tap it to except allen head screws and do that instead.
One... is this possible with good long term reliability? Two....anyone know where to get just the ring gear at a realistic price? or should I just replace the whole clutch shell? I "think" the ring gear is a 102T.
