As for the wires, you can just unplug them - it's not going to affect anything. Was the new cap purchased as a replacement for the fuel guage? If so, it should be the same "snap-in" design. If not, then you'll have to get creative.

I need alittle help. I have matching gas caps that I would like to have on my bike. I put the regular gas cap on no problem. My question is on the fuel gauge side. I do not use the fuel gauge at all (use trip meter) I want to install the new gas cap but want to know what to do with the wires that are going to the fuel gauge cap. Do I unplug? cut? etc? Any one do this before? Also, what would be a good way to have the new cap stay in since there are no threads on that side?

thanks for the reply. So if i unplug the wires the low fuel light won't come on right? the new cap i have is a screw on type with no gauge. So I am looking for ideas to install that too.

You asked about these before you bought them and I think you were told they wouldn't fit. Those caps are for earlier model HDs. Don't cut the wires... they plug into the harness under the tank. Unplug them and you can pull the gauge assembly out.
Well i got my 2 caps on now. The screw one fits perfect. On the other one I unplugged the gauge, wrapped some rubber around the new cap and now it fits nice and snug in the tank.
