I need some expertise on this issue. I put V&H basic slip ons on my FLHT and on my 5K service at the Harley dealer asked them to check to make sure the bike is running right (correct fuel/air mixture) They told me the bike is running fine and that I will not need rejetting. I've made several long touring trips in the mountains and the bike seems to perform well. I've been reading alot about making an already lean factory condition worse by adding free flow mufflers. I checked the condition of my spark plugs and they look brand new. Not black, not oil fouled, not a pretty tan color...just a white porcelin color. I'm no expert, but it looks to me like a lean condition. Although the bike starts idles and runs well, I'm concerned about burning a valve or piston over time.

I've scheduled a rejet and a Screamin eagle air cleaner assembly install for next week at an independent shop. They want $140 for the kit and a couple hours of labor to do the work. I'm not looking for a drag bike, I just want a dependable long lasting machine. Your comments and advice are appreciated.

I'm sorry If I'm beating a dead horse here.

It won't run lean until the engine can suck enough air to make use of the reduced back pressure your new pipes gave you. In other words, the fuel mixture won't change much at all if you only do one of pipes or air cleaner change. It's only when you do BOTH that you need to rejet. So chill ... ;)

Thanks for the relpy Boismier
Chillin is what I WANT to do! What you just told me totally conflicts to what the guy at the independent dealer told me. I like YOUR advice because it won't cost me anything!!

U might think about saving on the labor cost to install the SE a/c. I installed one Sunday on my bike in twenty minutes. Never did the job b4. Minimal tools were required. 8mm allen wrench, 3/4 boxed end wrench, 11mm socket, T-25 torx bit, flat tip screw driver, knike. Surprisingly easy if u have the torx bit. Something to think about. Just liked the way the metric fit. lol

2Duece. Thanks for the response. The air cleaner kit Is not a concern, and I'm sure I could install it myself. The issue is my motor running lean and my reading of the spark plugs. Boismier believes things are ok. I'm still unable to "chill".

Hippo, Could I bother you for your honest opinion?

I agree with Boismier, the air intake needs to be increaded before the lean condition should occure. Swaping out the SE air is not a big deal and putting in new jets is not all that bad either. The kit should come with instructions, if not here it is step by step.

Thanks for the advice, all of you. Like I said, the bike runs great as it is. I'm just trying to protect my investment. If I decide to go with the air cleaner mod and a rejet I'll do it myself. It is now time to chill

Thanks!

I put a new air cleaner on and rejetted my sporty. You will have to remove the air cleaner anyway to rejet. Just install the new air cleaner hardware when you put it back together. When you pull the top of the carb off, make sure it goes back on the same way. There are two dowels that have to fit in the body of the carb to set correctly. Take your time and enjoy learning more about the insides of your bike.

So why did you feel you needed to rejet and put a new air cleaner on your Sporty? Were you looking for more horsepower? was your bike not running right? I've heard from other folks that the TC 88 does not breath well with the factory air cleaner. I've also heard that the free flowing K&N air filter will cause oil to puke on your cam cover. Hmmm more information to ponder.
