I have a 2003 TC 88 motor and don't know if its an A or B.
How can I tell the difference without taking it apart. I know one is rubber mounted and one is not. All I have is the motor by itself.

In addition to Nitram's Pictorial for you which clearly shows the difference, the A is not counterbalanced & the B is - Thus the difference in the casting of the lower cases.

if your handlebars shake at an idle... is an A :)
Roger that! Mine sure must be an "A." Shakes so bad at idle, I can't make out anything behind me in mirrors.

Other than counterbalancing, what are the other significant differences? Will a "B" engine fit into an "A" engine bay directly without mods? Were B's rubber-mounted also?

Just tryin to learn. I appreciate your patience.

are you saying you just have a motor laying around or is it in a bike?
If it is in a bike, than the model will tell us. fill us in.

You can't fit one for the other without mods
I know you can fit an "A" in a softail with adapters, don't know about the other way around.
The "B" motor is longer, so I don't see how you can get it into a setup built for an "A"
