Israelis seized nuclear material in Syrian raidUzi Mahnaimi and Sarah Baxter

Israeli commandos seized nuclear material of North Korean origin during a daring raid on a secret military site in Syria before Israel bombed it this month, according to informed sources in Washington and Jerusalem.

The attack was launched with American approval on September 6 after Washington was shown evidence the material was nuclear related, the well-placed sources say.

They confirmed that samples taken from Syria for testing had been identified as North Korean. This raised fears that Syria might have joined North Korea and Iran in seeking to acquire nuclear weapons.

Blast at secret missile site killed dozens
Israeli special forces had been gathering intelligence for several months in Syria, according to Israeli sources. They located the nuclear material at a compound near Dayr az-Zwar in the north.

Evidence that North Korean personnel were at the site is said to have been shared with President George W Bush over the summer. A senior American source said the administration sought proof of nuclear-related activities before giving the attack its blessing.

Diplomats in North Korea and China believe a number of North Koreans were killed in the strike, based on reports reaching Asian governments about conversations between Chinese and North Korean officials.

Syrian officials flew to Pyongyang, the North Korean capital, last week, reinforcing the view that the two nations were coordinating their response.

Pelosi was right to go in there and talk to them, someone needs to and GWB won't do it. We need to open lines of communication with these countries or more things like this will happen. Pelosi has laid the ground work, now Condi needs to go talk to them too.

There is no talking to Iran, Syria, or N.Korea. At least not before you put a gun to their head to make them pay attention. I'd say Israel did just that. This story is just starting to come out (thanx Knuckle)...

All of this is just "heresay" from "unnammed sources" at this point, but if this story proves true it will outrank Operation Entebbe in '76 and the '81 bombing of the nuclear reactor in Baghdad as the most amazing example of precision military operation I have ever seen. Incredible!

Thank you GWB!

Exactly right, Chief, keep your friends close and your enemies closer. Talking never hurt anyone and it's another way to gauge the other side's resources. Saying and doing nothing is often the best thing, but not talking rarely is.

I wondered why the Syrians didn't raise a ruckus when the Israelis bombed them - in northeast Syria, by the way. It's a good thing they let the US know before they did it. There's no doubt in my mind they wouldn't do it, regardless what GW said.

Now Condi needs to go into Syria and rap some one's knuckles. And I think we should duplicate in North Korea what the Israelis did in Syria.

I agree, but the trick is that it needs to be done in a forceful manner and under the table (not in a devious way, just not publicly) all at the same time. The Syrians have been caught with their hands in one cookie jar or another, makes you wounder about the chemical accident they had where those Iranians also got killed.

Dennis Ross writing in The New Republic had a good article on what Israel stood to gain by this, here is the link:

There is a lot more going on than is being talked about in the press, military and foreign affairs web sites.

Fwiw..

my brother lives in Jerusalem. I sent him these news reports because sometimes events like this are not publicised and they spread by word of mouth instead of newspapers. Here is his reply:

I know the very details of this sorte.. It could make a blockbuster. Finally, one for the good guys.
Happy New Year and Succos.
Reuven

this of course doesn't tell us much except that the Israelis are pretty happy about it.
