If I remember right the nut on the right side of the bike has a 11/16" head and the one on the left side has a 3/4" head, and I have always driven them out from left to right. Could have the years mixed up, but that's the way I remember it.
Sometimes you have to tap on them quite hard with a brass punch and a big hammer. I suppose they could seize big time if they were not assembled with antiseize.
If you have shop tools a air hammer will get them out, but you have to be careful not to bugger up the threads on the shaft.
