anyone familar with the stage two mods? cam and ignition? the power gains look pretty darned impressive in my harley catalog. for less than $400 i could have the cam, ignition module, coils, and wires. i already have a thunderslide, vance and hines and k&n intake. my concern is realiabilty. if i go with the "drop in" cam which doesnt require new springs and such, will it wear the parts faster? or will it be no less reliable than stock? also the ignition module bumps the rev limiter up quite abit. is this a good thing with a fairly stock engine? what i am trying to do is justify doing this without sacrificing reliabilty. any insight would be great!!!!!

Hey otterbob'

No reliability issues to be concerned about with the mods you've mentioned unless you frequently spin the motor to the rev limiter. These big twins, like any long stroke, large bore engine, try to throw the recriprocating mass out of its confines at excessive RPMs.

Just don't get too wild with the cam or you'll require high pressure valve springs and your low end torque will suffer. Big cams require head work to realize any real performance gains.

I thought the stage 2 also included bigger pistons, resulting in 95"(I think). Didn't realize the HD cat gave specs w/o the pistons. Any idea what this does to gas mileage? (concerned about range, not cost)?

No -- the fxdwg3 was the CVO built wideglide. It had the stage 1 stuff I think. It was not a 95" bike and did not have HD stage 3 stuff. Last year was the last year for that bike - it was built in blue or black. The year before they built the red one (fxdwg2) which was once known as the "Switchblade" when it was a concept at the shows. I think they changed the name to PC.

The FXDWG3 is in fact a CVO bike but the engine is internally stock including the intake and exhaust, although the mufflers are slash cut. Externally the engine has a trick silver and chrome treatment rather than the black and chrome of the regular production FXDWG.

I have had 2 experiences with the SE Stage II kit. Both have been the 95" also. The first was a 99 FXDL. It has the 258 cams, high compression pistons,Mikuni HSR42 carb & SE heads. Puts out 101 ftlbs of HP AND Torque. What a rocket. The latest one is a 01 FLHPI. Different cams (211's),fuelie, no heads or high compression pistons.Puts out 95 ftlbs of Torque, 80+ HP. Both get around 38 miles /gallon. Not the greatest, but I wanted to go FAST, so I don't care!!
