i just bought a 02 sporty with 2100 miles when i got it i ask the guy about his services, he said he had never checked the primary because it did not call for it till 5000 miles and it was not half way. so considering its age i decided to do it and when i drained it i only got 16 oz out and i am sure cause i measures it, magnetic drainplug was not to junked up so ass the book calls for 32oz i refilled per specks to the measurement given in the tech book i used Mobil 1 15-50 took it for a ride and it shifted smoother and ran fine. my question is where did the other 16 oz go? did the factory screw up or did it evaporate?

I know when changing fork oil there are two measurements: wet and dry. The parts that are saturated with oil are taking up part of the volume. That and the Factory Manuals are riddled with typos anyhow :D

Litte off topic. either the service manual or owners manual calls for 3.5 quarts of oil in tourer. Mine and everyone I take to takes 4.

As for your bike, I wouldn't rule out low from factory. Wouldn't rule out over 3 years leaked out as seals dried. Don't know. Fill up correct and keep eye on. Only other thing is sell if your worried something is damaged. Me I would keep. But don't rely on decison making abilities.

As was said before, the 32oz is probably a dry fill. Your manual should have instructions for "visually" checking the proper level. On my Heritage, the level is checked by looking thru the clutch cover opening - the oil level should just touch the bottom of the clutch basket.
