Shovelhead Harley - reliable?

People keep adding here and there so I'll add my two cents. I got rid of my 01 TC and got a 73 FLH instead. Much much nicer machine!! Vibration you say? What vibration?? My 01 vibrated a hell of a lot more than my shovel!! This 73 is quite smooth and much quieter than the twin cam. That damn bike was noisy!!! Valve train and can chain slap/tensioners were always making noise. I put rocker lockers in and that simmered it down but still right noisy. This shovel is quiet, solid and starts right up and purrs... Gears to work together not chains and plastic. I'll take a shovel any day over a new bike. Maintenance IS the key and the person who works on it makes the difference. I been wrenching for 40 years and I don't get stranded. I enjoy my toys and take care of them...

My hands would be numb after 30 min at interstate speeds on my '80 FX from vibration.

Don't have that problem on my '90 FXRS or my twin cam ultra.

Well my 73 at 70 is very comfy with very little vibration. 70 is a sweet spot but I usually stay off the heavily traveled roads like interstates. I'm more happy at 60 myself. I'm not into speed anymore I just like cruising and enjoying the ride. A good looking ride that sounds good, looks good and is comfy is all I'm concerned with these days..

It vibrated a lot when I first got it but the rear wheel was out of alignment, top motor mount loose as hell, timing off, primary chain sloppy, front wheel loose... After I went through it all now it has very little vibration and rides quite smooth. I just rebuilt the motor and got about 150 miles on it now as well. NO LEAKS but the engine vent hose. Loving it more all the time. So glad I got rid of that damn twinkie it wasnt my type of machine. This one is perfect... I think a lot if it has to do with the person as well who is riding it. Everyone is different...

Just read your post havent been here in awhile. I ride a 73 shovel daily and its quite smooth. Just a little vibration but overall a nice ride. I have a bad back and can easily ride for hours in comfort. When its all lined up and adjusted properly they are just fine. I bought my 73 that sat in a garage for 8 years unridden. Everything thst has an adjustment was off and it ran like **** and vibrated right good.

I rebuilt the motor , aligned the rear wheel and tranny and adjusted everything and that made all the difference in the world. You get used to the vibration and dont even notice it for the most part and its only minimal anyway. Everyone around my neck of the woods is on new **** and lazy asses. Dont work on their own rides and or dont know how.

That isnt who i am i enjoy working on my ride as much as being in the Wind. Its in my blood and quite enjoyable, rewarding to do ones own work. Ive been a mechanic all my life as my profession until i went out with a bad back but harleys are easy to work on especially the real ones or older ones. Nobody seems to know how to work on the older bikes it blows my mind they couldnt be any easier. A set of points along with a chain and carb.. rigid mount is all me...
