WARNING Objects in this post may seem more confusing than they really are.

This post is not to teach you everything you ever wanted to know about a SERT. Instead it is to give you some insight into what a SERT is and what to expect. The SERT version used is 4.12. If you have specific question about the SERT, I would suggest you download the PDF file at the end of the post, it is the SERT manual.

I am NOT an Expert on the SERT and have only used it a few times but found it considerably less intimidating than it looks at first glance. I may make some mistakes in terminology and definition as I am NOT an EFI Expert. If you have specific knowledge about something please post your info. I will not argue the facts of this post but I am willing to learn so if you find a mistake please point it out.

This is my take on the cost. You pay a little more for the EFI bikes. Then you buy the SERT. If you bought a bike with a carb and wanted to do performance mods, most likely you would be buying a new carb to the tune of about $400. You would also need a new ignition module, another $200. If you didn’t like the results or achieved unexpected results and wanted to try something different, mo money, mo money, mo money. With the SERT if you don’t like the results, you just upload another MAP.

The SERT is a program that you load onto a desktop or laptop computer. It allows you to modify all aspects of the fuel and ignition control module called an ECM. A nice part of the SERT is that you can play with the MAP’s anywhere. If you have it loaded on your laptop and you are at work bored for instance you could mess around with a MAP and save it for later.

Another bonus with the SERT is how easy it is to load a MAP. You simply plug the computer into your bike and upload it. It is very fast and easy. I can upload a new map quicker than you can get the air cleaner off a carb, let alone remove the float bowl and the jets.

There are some issues with using a SERT. The first one is getting your SERT to communicate with the bike. The first time I used one it would not work with the ECM. It gave an error trying to read the VIN number of the bike. If you have this issue you need to take the bike to a dealer and have them reload your VIN number into the ECM. Convincing the dealership mechanics that this is all you need, will be the next problem. This problem seems to be in the earlier model Delphi ECM’s, 01-03.

In this thread we will be using the word MAP and it will refer to two completely different things. The first meaning of MAP as used up to this point is like a road map. Depending on where certain conditions are met, it tells the ECM what to do or where to go like a road map. The second MAP stands for Manifold Absolute Pressure. Try not to get too confused between the two. (note one sentence using to, too and two :D )

Active intake

Hey Springer....

When you load a file and go into the advanced tuning setup screen, there is a tab for Active intake enable or disable. What is actine intake and what are the different settings for? The default seems to be disabled. What advantages would enabling it do..and can it help my build?

Thanks, bro.

Thanks a lot for your post, dude. I know I want a SERT, and have been watching ebay for one, just a little nervous I'll buy the wrong one. The new supertuner sounds like it is less user friendly, and I think I'd rather have one of the previous models. I have an '03 Softail standard with a "B" motor, and really want to raise the rev limit....tired of hittin the wall when my EVO ridin buddies wanna show me my twin cam "aint ****" . Know what I mean? I'm just now gettin started on my winter upgrades...95" se flat tops, 203se cams, Hildreth Performance heads with squish grooves, SE adjustable pushrods, Cometic .030 head gaskets, 82cc chambers...should give me 9.5:1 c.r. I'll be running a Kerker 2into1 non-tuneable pipe. I just ordered the rental tools for changing the cam inner bearings to torringtons... anybody think I've missed anything?

Springer or anyone that may know the answer: I recently picked up an 07 Softail with a SERT but didn't get any cable, software, or anything. A friend tells me I need a "key" to re-map it. This is my first EFI bike.

Is there a way for me to get the key, cable, software, etc. without buying a whole new SERT?

You must have gotten the dongle (black box). It has the electronic key if it was previously used to upload a map to your ECU. You can get software and cables from the dealer. Or if you know someone you can borrow what you need.

Are these fueler's used often? How is it adjusted? With a laptop while adjusting the MAP?

The pipes and air cleaner have been changed out so I figure it must have been re-mapped somewhere along the line. Can an independent shop do that or is it something the dealer must do. The bike is incredibly quick. Much quicker than I expected.

Pardon my ignorance on EFI. I've been riding old school up till now and I appreciate you all taking the time to explain it.

Edit: I just read your edit and I have an idle issue like it's chasing a good rpm to be at. This probably why then. I'll take it to my local bike shop (no Harley dealers nearby) to see what can be done about removing it and re-programming it. I'll do some reading to figure out what an SEST is. Thanks much.

The fuelers are a simple way to add fuel to a lean running bike, especially after a pipe or air cleaner change. The problem on your 07 is that it runs in closed loop in many of the ECM's map cells, and the fueler can't override this unless you pull your O2 sensors and terminate the connectors. The SERT and it's brethren re-map the ECM instead of trying to fool it through an add-on. If you have the Fueler, I doubt your bike was re-mapped. If it was dyno tuned, the tuner could only have adjusted the heavy throttle settings. That would be good for performance but wouldn't do anything to fix cruise or heat issues.

I don't know how you would get the software for a Fueler, though a dealer should be able to help you. It is like a trimmed down version of the SERT software and you program it via a laptop. You are not adjusting the ECM's map (like with the SERT), just the parameters for the piggybacked Fueler to modify the signals to the injectors. If you want to remove the Fueler, you just unplug it. But if you like how it is running, you might just want to have a dyno operator do a cruise analysis to check your AFRs, and leave it alone if all is ok.

Chasing a stable RPM at start could be due to the IAC hunting. That's an easy fix with the SERT. I don't believe the Fueler allows for adjusting IAC.

If you want to really re-map your bike, you would end up pulling the Fueler and tuning the ECM with a SERT, SEST, or equiv. Some people like the PCiii, but you're in the SERT thread, so...

Thank you very much. I found myself in this thread thinking I had a SERT. Now that I know what I know and have researched this just enough to be dangerous I'm going to look into the PCIII. I wouldn't even concern myself with it right now but the idle thing has me a little bugged.

Thanks again for all the help.

hi all, question, have a 2008 softail, purchased sert and 2009 sert software disk, installed se heavy breather pod filter and se slip ons. loaded calibration 176AE106-000,
this is the factory supplied calibration on the disk for this setup, also in tuning set up , disabled the active exhaust and intake, (australian softail,). system info tab in tools states calibration loaded successfully but in setup modes history tab , vci does not show any calibration history, any clues, cheers from ozz, mick

There is no software for the Race Fueler. It just plugs in and has some adjustable dials inside it. It connects between the injectors and the ECU, just unplug it and re-connect the ECU cable directly to the injectors if you want to remove it.

Also check out this post if you want to know how to use it....

I 'disabled' my active exhaust too, see the URL below...

2008 RK Closed Loop Bias

Wondering if anyone has experience with the newer bikes with O2 sensors and using the closed loop bias table to adjust AFR in the closed loop portion of the map. If I understand this correctly, all AFRs were set to 13.2, then front and rear VEs were set to values that resulted in the measured AFRs being 13.2 across the entire table. All AFRs were then set back to the baseline with a large portion of the cruising range at 14.6 where the ECM runs closed loop. This was all done by my tuner at the Harley shop. I believe that to further tune the 14.6 zone you go into the bias table to make adjustments, where lowering the bias runs leaner and raising the bias runs richer. My bias settings are all still at the values included in the SERT map and range from 506 to 661. I would like to run a little leaner in cruise for better mpg. Is there any correlation to what bias value results in a specific AFR, or how much of a bias value change makes how much of an AFR change? I can use the Data Monitoring function to look for Knock Retard to tell me I have gone to lean. Is the only way to know by measuring the actual AFR?

Thanks!

SERT Adjustment Question.

Bike has...
2008 FXSTC.
Vance and Hines Big Radius 2 into 1
SE Air Filter
Newest SERT
Dealer Dyno'd, not a canned MAP Download.

Problem is;
Bike Starts and runs fine. Runs beautifully, no popping at all during warm up, first few minutes. After it warms up.......
However....Shifting up from 1st, or second or 3rd. Bike rumbles and pops [and ocasionally back fires] Also constant deceleration pops.
Bike accelerates cleanly and smothly except for shift points.

If I wait to shift after 2800rpm to 3000rpm, no rumbles or pops. [3000 rpm is a little high to be shifting there all the time] Any shifting when it is warmed from 2000 to 2650, and it pops, rumbles.

I have the SERT and software, But the dealer has the MAP and will not give it up.
They advise that "The Vance and Hines Pipe has a charastic in it's design, that the dealer trained tuner could not get around." They wrote that right on my receipt. Yet they still took all of my money for the job.

My question is, Am I correct in stateing that I can't make any adjustments with my SERT to the bike because I don't have a copy of the dealer DYNO'd map. Any adjustments I make will be from the base map chosen from the CD and are all relative offsets to the factory ECM settings. So I would overwrite the Dealer DYNO'd tune and be going backwards.
Should I be looking at the DECEL ENLEANMENT table, If I make adjustments to the copy on the CD in the 2000 to 3000 RPM range. Just wanting to adjust that narrow bad and retest. The SERT software would use the CD file and overwrite all other data in the ECM, Is that correct ?

Wonder what my Plan-B should be.

There is no reason not to give up your map, that is what you paid for. I would argue it out with the dealer that you paid for them to make a custom map for YOU and they did not deliver. If you paid by credit card threaten to call the card company and contest the charges. If they still will not give it up, they likely have something to hide, like they didn't change much in the map at all and the "custom tune" is more like a canned map then a custom tune.

Plan B, find a reputable place to dyno tune the bike right and check in advance that they will give up the map when done. Also call the card company if you did pay by credit card.

When we dyno tune, we give up anything you want. The MAP, the runs or anything else pertaining to your bike and tune. There is no reason for anyone NOT to do this unless they have something to hide, IMO.

#394 ·
You should double check that ... I believe you can download the existing map but you can not look at it and there can not use it as a starting point. You still need to have the original map to start with.

#396 ·
So can you view the file in the ECM on any new version of SERT? I got the 2007, and it annoys me you can't.

I am sorry to say I was not able to down load the SERT manual. I will try again later. I have an 03 softail fxstsi. Is there an updated SERT I might want over the 03 version? Also, is updating to TTS something I would want to do? I will be doing a 117" this winter. I run a PC3-usb now on my 95". The tuner I want to use for the dyno runs told me SERT. Done deal!!! I still need to do the heat cycles. I would also like to put a few miles on before the dyno runs. Recommendations please!!
