My Harley has got some electrical issues. The new HD battery I purchased Monday is dead as a post. I realize that there is probably a drain somewhere and I expect to find the problem, but while examining the battery area under the seat I noticed some corrosion on the right side screw of the ignition module. I thought it was wax or something until it turned to powder when I touched it. Is this fairly common?

Thanks.

Usually that’s an indication of the hardware having been exposed to battery acid or perhaps the reaction that occurs between two dissimilar metals when moisture and electrical currents are present. If it’s possible that the battery could leak or mist acid to the area mentioned, that would be something to look for. Before maintenance free batteries, battery acid corrosion stemming from the battery vent tube or cell refill spillage was fairly common. To clean-up, baking soda works well at neutralizing the acid affected areas.
