i like the looks of the vance and hines long shots or the samson over and under drag pipes for my heritage softail classic. basically i want to know which are better. i would prefer a louder (im responsible honest, haha) and better performing than my hd fishtail slip-ons. it looks like you have to buy heat shields seperate with the samsons? is that the case? do pipes generally come in a kit with jets and all? sorry for all the questions but i am new to harleys. any insight would be a tremendous help!!!!

I understand your dilemma. They are both very nice pipes. I would lean to the V&H myself. I've ridden a few bikes that had them and they seem to be a nice sounding and performing pipe. I have the Thunderheader on my Ntrain. Just my own liking though. For the Jet kits, I don't believe they come together. The usual upgrade is the pipes followed by a breather kit of some sort. I used the Screamin Eagle myself, easy kit to install but the dealer has to reprogram the computer for the new mods if you have the fuel injection. Good luck. :D

I have Samson Dual Fishtails (no baffles) on my 98 Heritage and love the sound. Especially when I back off it in a lower gear. A buddy of mine has V&H long shots and he likes the sound of my pipes better than the V&H's. The V&H pipes look good because their double walled and don't blue. I've put heat sheilds on the Samsons that covers most of the blue on the front pipe.

I prefer the longshots, as stated they come with the shields and have good chrome quality. The baffles remove with one screw if you really need all that volume.
The Samsons look almost identical, but price them out WITH the shields because they will blue quickly.
You can do a lookup 'chops' for pix in member gallery for longshot views.
And yes you would need to rejet, especially if the airbox is modified in addition to pipes.

ok i did it. stage 1 is complete, and wow does this thing run. i went with the new v&h bigshot longs, they are 1/4" bigger than longshots, have a hidden crossover, and come with billet tips. i put a dynojet thunderslide kit, and a s+s style breather kit with k&n. i am estatic as to the way the vance and hines look and sound! wowowwow
