running too rich

I have a 1986 FXRS with the stock carb. It has the stock jets and I put in a new acceleration pump. It smells like it is running too rich, smokes on acceleration, inside of pipes has black soot. Other than an occasional doggy hesitation it runs fine. the mixture screw on the carb is sealed according to the book. I was wondering if someone could tell me where it is and how to adjust it. I have the same issue with my 1999 heritage classic. Smokes when choked, smells rich, little soot in the pipes, but runs great. A quater turn would do. Do I really need to pull the carb for this?

I think a pre-1989 carb may be different, but this is a pic of an 89 and up carb. The pic is taken from the bottom of the carb, while still mounted on the bike, so it's kinda upside down and backwards. Turn screw in (clockwise) to lean out the mixture, or turn it out (counterclockwise) to enrichen. I had to do this on my wife's '05 Sporty, and found this pic on xlforum.net. The screw was blocked by an aluminum plug, not shown in picture. To remove the plug, see here and here for some useful info.

If you swapped out your exhaust and air cleaner for more free flowing parts, you should be running lean - if you haven't changed anything else. :whisper:
