I switched over my FLSTF to RP motor oil in 2007. I was about to do my third oil change (I change oil way more than I need to)> and went to the local HD dealer for supplies (4 quarts 20/50RP, some gaskets and other assorted hardware).
The guy at the counter knows me pretty good and took me in back to a street glide with under 15k miles, the heads were off and there was a valve embedded into one of them - total toast. On the top of it was black, burned crusted stuff - looked like cooked sand.
I found out this was the 6th HD in as many months of various types from all over (not just local bikes) and they all ran Royal Purple motor oil.
The dealer sent a oil sample to RP for examination and they said nothing was wrong (would they really admit it if true anyway - think of the law suits)? So they sent one to an independent examiner and they found the oil had totally broken down into it's basic components and fused because of heat (and we know HD's run on the hot side compared to the water cooled fellows out there). HUMMM....
So i switched to Amsoil for this change. But before I drained the RP from the motor I cleaned my drain pan completely. When I looked at the RP in the pan it was somewhat gritty and only the normal (little) amount of metal on the drain plug.
What really worries me is I started getting some top-end [klinking/tapping] noise recently and have not locked it down yet. I guess I'll know when it breaks and I tear it down.
But I thought I should pass this one. I did a quick Google search and nothing jumped out (yet). Anyone else heard of this happening?
