Does anyone have the history of - legend behind the riding bell ? I know that it brings good luck and it is forbidden to buy it for yourself.

OK then...

Have you ever noticed that small Bell on someone's Scooter and wondered why it was there? It's more than just a decoration - it has a very specific function.

As we all know, life has many mysteries that have no apparent solutions. One of these is Evil Road Spirits. They are little gremlins that live on your Scooter. They love to ride and they are also responsible for most of the problems your scooter has. Sometimes your turn signals refuse to work, the battery goes dead, the clutch needs adjustment or any of several hundred other things go wrong. These problems are caused by EVIL ROAD SPIRITS. (The Harley Gods can't help this situation).

Evil Road Spirits can't live in the presence of a Bell. They get trapped in the hollow of the Bell. Among other things, their hearing is supersensitive. The constant ringing of the Bell and the confined space drives them insane. They loose their grip and eventually fall onto the roadway. (Have you ever wondered how Pot-Holes are formed?, now you know.)

The Bell has served it’s purpose. (No, it will not make you a better rider, only Practice, Practice and more Practice will help do this.)

If you have picked up a Bell of your own, the magic of the Bell will work in some ways, BUT if you were given the Bell by a good friend, the power of the Bell has been doubled and you will always know that somewhere out there you have a Very Special Friend that is helping to look after you.

The Bell doesn't have to be expensive or fancy and the size is insignificant. In most cases the Bell is made of Brass or Silver. The cost is about the cost of a beer. When placing the Bell on your scooter, the closer to the ground the better. (Don't give those little critters a chance to get aboard.)

So if you have a friend that does not have a Bell or a friend that does have one, why not be the Friend to him/her that shows that you really care. It's a Great feeling for the recipient to know you personally cared that much for them. The Bell, plus good preventive maintenance program by the scooters owner will eliminate the Evil Road Spirits.

Some of you may be skeptical, so allow me to relate a story. Two friends were having a refreshment, when one of them noticed a small polished stone on a gold chain around his friends neck. Pointing to the amulet, his friend asked, "Why the Stone?" His friend answered, it keeps tigers away. "Does it Work?" his friend replied. "Do you see any Tigers around here?" was his reply. If nothing else, a Bell and good maintenance sure can't hurt so why not give your friend all the luck you can give him/her.

- Now you know the mystery of the BELL -

- Give a Friend a BELL and let them know how much you care.

I recently saw one mounted on the lower triple clamp. It was rather substantial in size and had left a big nasty dent in the top of the front fender the first time the forks did their job.

There is an even older meaning. It used to be attached to the swingarm.
It stood for all the brothers you lost along the way, and every time you worked on the bike and touched the bell you had a silent minute to think about them.

Guess it got superseded by the gremlin thing when the boutiques started selling them. :D

I always had my bell attached to the chain adjusting bolt ( the potholes formed were behind me ), but now with these snail cam adjusters..., and yes, capitalism is the best sytem in the world, sure as hell beats socialism, marxism, communism etc.
