While giving the bike a good going over today I found a broken spoke on my rear wheel. How big of a job is it to replace ? Does the tire need to be removed from the rim ? Can a broken spoke cause any other damage I should be looking for ?

If it's an outside spoke you may be able to get a new one in place without unlacing the wheel. Inside spoke will require unlacing to install. Usually a broken spoke means there are others that are loose. Years ago we would install a new spoke, today with more power from the engines it's usually best to relace the wheel with new spokes. Spokes do require routine checking for proper tension in order to keep the wheel true (especially the rear).

Thanks, I'll take another look. I was thinking of repalcing with stainless spokes and nipples. I know that a few loosened up. Guess I better get out the manual and learn to lace.
