You will no doubt be arriving through Auckland, my hometown for the past 30 years and NZ's largest city. The local HD franchise - Auckland Motorcycles & Power Sports has an HD rental division , but as your friend will tell you it will surely pay to order it well in advance - especially if you're travelling through the summer months.
You will definitely want to do the South Island - its where all the North Islanders end up doing a long ride at one time.
And if you're in town do look us up.
