Recently purchased a set of billet wheels, 21x3.5 and 18x3.5

I have a 2002 Fatboy, from my understandings, the widest tire i can fit is a 140? That is if it is a 16" wheel though, correct? With my 18" set up, a 150/70-18 should fit? With it being taller, the profile should be like a 140?

I also gotta worry about fitment in the fender, make sure no bolts rub or anything, right? Does anyone have this type of set-up on a softail? Looking to get a set of Avon's - Any recommendations maybe?

Look forward to responses, thanks!!

Hey Relentless

Finding good 18" rear tires for any Big Twin is not easy as you have found out. A good friend of mine with an FXR used a 140x18" front Metzeler 880 that he turned around. Don't know if he actually had to turn it around but his rationale was that the tread pattern on front tires is different from the rear with the angled grooves on fronts directed so that they would shed water better when braking. Other than that he felt tire construction and belt patterns were the same, front or rear. I also don't know if that is true or not but he's worn that one out with no problems and will soon be facing the limited choices you are.

As far as actual size of the different tires go, you can find all the dimensions in some of the online catalogs although you might have to dig deep to find them. Those dimensions are based on standard rims though. Go wider or narrower rims and you have to figure it out for yourself. My experience with Metzeler LaserTecs is that the width called out in the Metz catalog are a little wider than the actual tire by about 1/2" total. The diameter was what was called out in the catalog, close to stock.

Good Luck
