PUFF PUFF PUFF - 88 Electra Glide

Just bought this loverly old girl from a brother in Kentucky.

The crankcase breather is puffing away like Thomas the tank engine into the air cleaner on idle but not leaking a lot of oil.

I was thinking of fitting a catch can with filter under the seat to try and quieten it down.

Does that sound like a plan or is there something wrong with breather system to make it so noisy...?

I would inspect/replace the umbrella valves in each rocker assembly first.I would also verify that the piston rings and cylinder bores are in good shape and sealing well.

Only at idle? I'd do a compression check. Low compression should send you looking for worn rings/cylinder or a valve not seating properly.

Yep... good ideas... will check comp over the weekend.

This old girl still gets up and boogies, doesn't smoke at all and doesn't use any oil.... just puff puff puff on idle.. Sounds weird.

Route the breather hose down to a lower frame rail, outboard of the rear tire, you don`t need anything on the end of the hose.

I would inspect/replace the umbrella valves in each rocker assembly first.

This engine does not have umbrella valves in the rocker covers.

I have no clue as to the puff puff puff, but there is a company that makes a small chrome catch bottle and hose that is made just for catching the oil coming out of the breather and bolts up around the throttle body or air cleaner i think it is, if your interested let me know and ill do some hunting on where i seen it at and let you know

Cheers HDM... thought I'd try routing the hose out the back to see if it quietens down. If that doesn't work I might make up a catch can with some exhaust pipe and bits. Doesn't have to look billet as it'll prolly be under the seat. I'll take a pic of how it goes...
