Jeez... Seems to get me every time.
So, Ive been putting up with this tiny little leak from the inner primary for a pretty good while now, and decided that this week was as good a time as any to rip it down and fix it. Our nice riding weather is in the can for the next week or so, why not..
So I pulled the inner primary off today having decided that I was 99.9% sure where it was coming from, and sure enough, the oil seal is shot.
No biggie, ordering new inner bolts, new seal, new gaskets for the engine side and the outer cover was all in the game so as far as the budget goes, I'm happy...Momma's happy. 'Sall good...
Another upside is that I've got the whole bit all apart, nicely arranged, mostly cleaned up and on the workbench in a very respectable time frame. Smooth as silk they say...
Wrinkled silk it now appears...
Upon close inspection of the compensator assembly, I see very heavy wear in the bearing surfaces of the extension and the primary gear. Two very nice areas of that beautiful copper/bronze color indicative of accelerated bearing abrasion...
Crud... Now I hafta buy a new comp.
The SE comp is an upgrade I've had on my list for awhile, it wasn't planned for now tho.
Two questions for the experienced hands here...
WHERE is the best place to buy ?
I need bolts, gaskets, and of course the comp kit.
WHY is there this much wear on this bearing surface already? (37k miles)
I understand the overwhelming public comments regarding the weak design on the '07 models, but geez louise...shot at 37k ??
Really ???
Oh yeah-- Another REALLY important question ?
How much wear is acceptable on the tensioner shoe at this stage in the life of the bike?
I haven't grabbed the micrometer yet, but there are definitive and substantial grooves in the leading edge and following (but diminishing) to the clutch end. I'm going to eyeball it and say somewhere in the 1/64th inch range on the leading edge.
What say you ???
