I recently purchased a Power Commander IIIr for my 02 Fatboy. I am hoping to get it working soon, becuase I have to say so far I am not that impressed. The first model they sent had the wrong firmware and I could not upload or get any maps from the PC. The sent me a 2nd unit. I am running stock pipes (off a Heritage, but pretty much the same i figure) with the baffles removed, and an SE intake. So I loaded 805-007 for long shots without baffles and SE intake. When I started the bike, it immediately went to 3000+ RPM. I waited a few seconds to make sure it was not gone back down and then killed the engine. I was ready for a Saturday ride, so I said screw it, pulled the PC and went riding.

Upon calling Dynojet, they say I should have used a map with slip ons for stock without baffles. I can kinda see that. Secondly, he says I might have to set the throttle position, and I am thinking okay I have seen the menu, but how do I do it? He tells me the PC has to be on the bike and connected to machine. So I tell him I have the power adapter, and was uploading the maps at my computer. No, that wont work if you need to set the throttle position. Do I?, I ask. Well maybe sometimes, on those bikes.

So I am a little frustrated. Here is what I know:

a) first said unit had a dynojets map for a stock bike (assuming it was not wrong, like the firmware).

b) stock bikes run lean

c) considering a and b, with the first unit on the bike, my exhaust popped a lot, especially decelerating.

Does this make sense? It would seem that to pop, the bike is running rich not lean, and how is it running rich if I have increased the air curve and the map is supposedly for stock. This might not apply if the first unit was just all jacked up. I will attempt to reload another map tonight and adjust the throttle position, which brings us to...

d) Dynojet's documentation sucks! Nowhere was I told about setting throttle position or how to do it. It sounds like, hey buy the unit, buy this other adapter, plug in a 9v, hit upload, and ride away.

Someone please reassure me this thing is worth the effort. I get a little nervous hearing my $20,000 engine rev that high, and the tech say on yeah, you might have to set throttle position.

And I guess with the bitching done, does anyone have experience running a similiar config to mine? Thanks for info.

Chops: I am running stock ecu. I guess i thought that the SE intake and removed baffles created more rise in the air curve than they do. However, I am still not sure why it was popping all with the 'stock' map, which should be the leanest non-zero map. But then again that unit was messed up, perhaps that affected it. Sweet on the tombstone, post a pic when you take one.

Hippo: I will load another map and then set the throttle position (tonight if I get time) I asked the tech at Dynojet about setting it and he explained it. I am guessing that cuased most of the problem last time. The thing that confused me so much, was with my first unit I never set the TP, and Dynojet never mentioned when I did all the troubleshooting on that unit. I was very impressed that Dynojet even added a page to their manual for installation of rubber molding around the ECU tray. I just think they would save a lot of trouble and impress even more if they added on paragraph that said, after installation, download map, set throttle position, and you are done. This would especially helpful to people that buy the power adapter thinking that is all they need to program it remotely.

Anyway, I know this is probably the best solution and when my bike is tweaked, I will probably love the PC. It certainly beats rejetting. I just learned a lot of these details the hard way. Thanks for the advice guys.
