My number one choice would be chrome (always), but my second choice would be to polish them. You can remove the clearcoat with a heavy-duty paint stripper. If you know a furniture stripper personally, perhaps he'll let you soak the bottoms overnight in his tank.
If you want to do it yourself, a gallon can of Stryp-eze should do the trick. Just make a long tray out of heavy duty aluminum foil. Coever the fork bottoms with the goo and cover it with another layer of aluminum foil. Let it sit overnight. The clear coat should rub right off just fine with a fine scotchbrite pad.
Be sure to check if the stripper you use is safe for aluminum. Some are caustic and will etch the metal very badly.
