Well these are old plugs before I changed everything. So before the work I did yes I ran octane booster in it, why? I thought using it would alleviate the sound I was getting. At the time I didn't know it was a lifter making the noise. Fast forward to after I did the work I did and the carb was jetted really rich, the plugs looked black like a rich condition, jetted down 2 sizes and now I am at the point of the picture. I have 2 new plugs to put in tomorrow. I still get some chugging between 2k and 3 1/2k rpms. I now run ethenol free gas with no additive. I guess it would make obvious sense to put the new plugs in tomorrow and see what they look like. I feel I'm getting a lean spit and once I get to the main jet it runs so good I just need to work out the low rpm issue. Right now I'm running a .280 intermediate jet, a 70 main, and a 66 air bleed. It's almost there. If I'm in neutral and try to rev and hold 2,500rpm it starts to chug or spit. I know this because It happened when I adjusted my timing which was off 10°

Looks like mine when I used to run octane booster.. That stuff really turns them rusty looking.. I don't use it anymore

No Use, when running the Crap they pass off as Gasoline these days.. Not Worthwhile.

PSA; When considering Octane. Note that almost all of our fuel, and most "boosters" use Alchohol to increase octane.. Look it up.... Me No Likey!! Quality Race Gas seems to still have real Gasoline with various additives, including Lead, (in some) the stuff I like to mix with gas in "true high performance" engines. Off Soapbox now.

Originally before I replaced the cam etc. I was trying to stop a noise I was hearing and many suggested higher octane, so I was adding Lucas octane booster for a couple tanks worth of fuel. Now I am running ethanol free 90+ octane. Headed to pick up my new plugs. I'll run it and see what they look like. I feel like maybe a 66 air bleed is to big? It came with a 40 installed. 2k-3 1/2k rpm is where I get the issue.

First suggestion... Know exactly what Pre-ignition sounds like. 2nd, I like yer Fuel Choice. 3rd, I;m thinking that with a Large Bleed, you are bringing the main in too late, Popping Lean??
Might be able to read plugs with that setup... But, only on complete shut down, after a WFO blast.. which still won't tell ya Nothing about the Transition... Maybe (just maybe) if you hold RPM is that transition "spot" for a bit, then Kill engine??

There are still a couple of places around here that have pumps of VP110. Leaded. The last time I looked it was $8.50 a gal. Before this current economic fiasco. Years ago, you could pump it straight into your tank. Now only into a gas can. I ran it 50/50 in my EVO FX. Not a "true high performance" engine, but enough that I did have some detonation.

Now, nothing but ethanol free premium, 90 or 93. 50¢ or more extra per gallon and an 8-10 mile drive to get to the stations that sell it. Worth it to me. But getting harder to justify in my pea brain.

But... Cheaper than the result of Pre-ignition!!!
BTW Rarely do I run 50/50.. One Paricular Bike only seems to "need" about 25/75
Note; this is with Leaded race gas... as the very first introduction of Lead, results in an exponential initial "boost"..

I see you are in the "do not use anti-sieze" camp.

Not meaning to hijack the thread, but I just did a big loop to check on race gas. The VP110 is now up to $9.50 a gal. One station backed down to 100 octane and only charges $7.60 a gal.

I have the anti seize here I just didn't use for the first ride. But yeah I'm going to put it on

Looks like the timing is a little too advanced. Look at the electrode strap. Notice where it changes color. Ideally that color change will occur right in the middle of the bend. If you do not have an illuminated magnifying glass you should get one as it is really hard to see the details with a naked eye. Peppering of the white portion indicates the onset of detonation. Tiny aluminum balls is detonation. Very hard to see without illumination and magnification.

That's odd I just set the timing a couple days ago and set it at 0° advance. Would putting new plugs in have any influence on that? I set the timing with the old set of plugs. I don't think it would but what do I know.

That is a very strange color for an AIR-COOLED Engine Spark Plug ...

It must be an additive ?

New plugs in, air bleed in the super e down from 66 to 46. Disconnected voes re-timed. Running great. Finally had a ride that I was pumped about. Headed to the beach this weekend, local bike week out here the following weekend, everythings good.
Best part, did it all myself.
