hello,

new to the forum, first thread, ok,

I have a new 2002 dyna wideglide, with a vance/hines pro pipe h/s, and an se high flow kit, and dynajet kit all installed by me, main jet size is a dynajet 190, needle in the #4 clip slot as recamended, stock pilotjet, with mixture set to 3and an 1/8 turns . really runs great, but it has started to ping at low rpm's like when leaving stops or mildly accelerating, this did'nt start right away after doing the work, but it seems to be getting worse, today I switched to colder NGK plugs and this demished the pinging but did not eliminate it .

I am at sea level in so. cal. so the 190 should be fine, it also ran very well with a dynajet 185, in fact the only difference I can feel is slightly harder pull with the 190, and the tank range dropped off 5-10 miles, but the plug color is good with eather jet, but I just can't seem to dial out that pesky pinging

has anyone else run into this problem ?

Double check to make sure there are no intake or exhaust leaks. Are you sure it's the engine pinging and not a heat shield rattling?? That happens.
You could change slow jet to a 46 and re-adjust the mixture screw and see what happens. If none of that works, I'd put the stock mufflers back on and see if it goes away.

A new bike with no major mods should not ping inless there is a problem as EdY said. The bike is under warrenty? If you dont find a leak ( I would think that would be the #1 thing to check since you had the carb off) and everthing seems right take it to the dealer & have the MAS checked, even new ones do go bad. I take you run 91 octang min?

4th slot from the top or the bottom, ie is the clip closer to the top or the tip of the needle? third groove being the center groove. Where are the three little washers?

Sounds unusual, mainly because the jetting sounds like it is quite rich.

pinging

yes, chevron premium is all I run . the pinging has been a kind of progresion, I installed the propipe a couple weeks ago and rejetted to 185, the dynajet kit was installed over 2 months ago, and have been on a number of h.o.g. rides (day trips), and the motor has run perfect, the pinging just started this week .

I did in fact find the two rear header bolts had loosened a little, and retightened them, the fronts stayed tight, the shields are tight, it is deffenitly an engine ping, if I rev it slowly or leave a stop with very light loading it does not ping, it only pings if you rev it briskly or leave from a stop in a normal manner or a little more than normal .

if you slowly rev and then leave the stop and keep the revs up, you stay above the pinging range . and I should reitarate that other than the pinging, the motor runs perfect and makes great power for a stocker , someone asked about the mileage, it has just over 3600 on the odo .

needle position

hippo,

just cought your post after I had allready sent the one above, the needle is in the #4 position from the top of the needle, this is where the dynajet instructions said to put it as a starting point, it seemed to run great in that position so I hav'nt changing it yet .

as to the main jet, I agree with you fully, it ran great set to 185 and was there for two weeks, I only tried the 190 when the pinging started to see if that would cure it, but like I said in the first post, it really did'nt help that much in the power department, it did seem to ping less with the 190 at first, but now i'm not sure, and the tank range has suffered a little, I will put the 185 back in when we are all in agreement that the main jet is deffinitly not causing the pinging .

what i'm wondering now is, if I have the top end rich enough now, but the bottom end is too lean, the low speed jet is the stock #42, and the mix is set to 3, 1/8 turns .

The stock low jet used to be a 42 in 99 and then they went to a 45 stock.

Are you sure the low is now a 42 again?

If all the other stuff, ie intake leaks etc, checks out it may well be the bike is running so rich it is getting loaded up with carbon. These days if you see any color on the plugs you are too rich.

Try to run the thing with the needle either in the center groove or put the needle in the second groove from the top with one of the little washers under the clip effectively running it between the 2nd and 3rd groove from the top. Try a 175 main and a 45 low. Make sure the accelerator pump is working properly and spraying into the center of the throat.

Try running some strong cleaner thru it, like Techroline or Berryman's B12 and beat the $hit out of it for a couple of days. Maybe it helps.

If you want to see if the thing is carboned up or not you can take the pipes off and turn the engine over until the exhaust valves open. Then you can look in there with a flashlite and get an idea.

not sure about that

ahh, as this is the only transportation I own, i'll pass on thrashing a brand new 20k bike, but the carbon build up sounded logical so I removed the pipes and checked inside, there was a very small amount but with only 3600 mi. , and a weeks worth of running the motor fairly rich, it's all good .

with that said, I think the sound i'v been hearing is in fact a ringing sound inside the pipe ! , I had a few guys at the harley lunch today listen to the noise, including two of the tech's there today, and the popular opinion is that the bike is fine, just a little rich, but not pinging at all, sooo cool .

so I guess I need to repack the pipe to quiet down the ringing noise .

thanks to hippo and the other guys that tried to help, this seems to be a very cool sight, and i'm sure there will be many more questions on my part in the neer future .
