The annual Palm Springs (CA) bike and hot rod weekend scheduled for the weekend of October 11-13 has been canceled.

Reason: security concerens about a "bad" element being in town.

This was a very enjoyable event with the main street of Palm Springs blocked off except to bikes. Lots of entertainment and vendors. Too bad.

Another one bites the dust. :(

Well, I haven't canceled my hotel reservation yet. Hmmm.

It's worth a thought. I preferred walking around to the bars & places and didn't buy much anyway. Let's see if others run the same idea up the Palm Springs flag pole.

I lived out in Palm Springs for almost 18 years. And this is the first time I have heard of them canceling the October bike and car weekend. The, motels, vendors and various bars in P.S. love it because they make good money for that weekend. And usually there is very little trouble on that weekend. They certainly won't chase anyone one off if 5,000 or so just happen to show up on the way to ???????????

Well, highrider, it may be worth a try. Those in attendance may be you, me and medicinewoman and whoever we can drag along. :D

I'll post on a few sites and see if anyone bites. And we can see if there's any further response here.

Won't have much of a chance to post though until Sunday night. Have some business to take care of tomorrow morning and then off to San Diego in the p.m.

I just remember something while living in Palm Springs they tried to kill Spring break the vendors, motels, restaurants really want the outside business even 1 weekend like the one in October can really help those businesses with the revenue. I know we would be doing them a favor if we all went there. Those business count on tourism, and weekends like October. So I'm passing the word along. Screw sponsored events. When we rode back in the 60's and 70's we never announced we just showed up. As it should be....

No, Palm Springs did not replace the event with a Gay Parade. Palm Springs does have a large gay/lesbian community. They have an annual gay/lesbian parade there.

There are some related threads on this overall topic.

It's unclear now whether bikers will go to Palm Springs as part of an unorganized event in October. Many are very opposed to spending any money in Palm Springs. Time will tell how it shakes out.
