Paint Problem

My '02 RoadKing has the silver tribal flames over metallic purple radical paint set (PN 95717-01BCE), which was intalled by the dealer prior to display on the sales floor. I bought this bike in May. In July, I noticed that the paint was cracking around the seat attachment gippy mounted on the rear fender.

Sounds like when I called the factory about my Ultras.Think it was Lori I talked too.She must have thought I was one of those Yuppie bikers.Telly me 30MPG was good for my Ultra plus other things. Then I told her I had been riding since before she was s--ting in her diapers.Hate it when a--holes try to tell an experienced rider a bunch of s--t.Ive fixed more bikes than most of them have seen.Rocky
twincamzz, tell me more about the certificate of authenticity. I've got the green/silver flames also (91 of 200) but never heard of the certificate. I have no doubt about the authenticity of the paint set, my dealer is a good one and they've earned my trust and respect. Paint set was on the bike ('02 FLHRI) when I purchased it. Thanks.

He He. Yep, Lori seemed to have plenty of HD attitude.

Sorry for the delay in answering Jeff. Missed your post somehow. Anyways...my paint set was also already on my scooter when I traded for it this summer. In the saddlebag was a certificate much like a friend got with his 95th anniversary Fatboy. It had the number (ie #77 of 200) and some instructions to follow if there was ever a problem and replacement was necessary. It also came with 3 bottles of touch up paint that are not commercially available since the color was custom mixed. (according to the info ). BTW...do you have flames on your rear fender ?

The certificate was "titled" Harley-Davidson Color Shop Radical Custom Paint. Inside under Service & Repair it reads "Front & rear fenders may be purchased as seperate service parts, however, to maintain the exclusivity of individually numbered sets, this Custom Paint Warranty Identification Card must be presented to your dealer to obtain a service part fuel tank."
On the back page it states that the normal warranty period is only 90 days. Then at the very bottom it states that participating dealers "may" offer a 12 month limited warranty on it when installed by the dealer on a new bike prior to delivery.
This paint set retailed for 4200.00 ! They damn well better offer a 12 month warranty ! (I didn't give anywhere near that for mine, but still...c'mon !) 4200.00 price tag and Wyo is having problems getting this taken care of ? That's plain ol' BULLSHIT !!

So I take it you have noticed a slippage in Customer satisfaction in the Maint. side of the house since JC left??? Being at their mercy for 60 days this past spring, I can honestly say that it was JC, Ron and Danny that kept me aprised and informed of the situation my sled was in... Sorry to hear of your troubles, but I still, to this day, have never rec'd anything less than complete customer satisfaction from East Coast... And I am just a Transient here....
twincamzz - nope, no flames on the rear fender. I did get the touch up paint. Next time I'm at the dealer I'll ask 'em about the certificate. Thanks much!!

Hey Devilhog,

I have no reason to doubt the service guys at East Coast, I KNOW they called several times. The main point I was trying to convey was that things started to happen when I took it upon myself to contact HD and keep calling them until there was some action. I have to agree that I have had nothing but positive experiences with the folks at East Coast. I will continue to do business there.

I bought my ' 02 RKC from East Coast HD and they were good people to deal with, but I've never had any experience with their service dept. I had a couple of problems with my bike, but I took it to Waugh's HD in Orange where I live and they took care of it with no problems even though I didn't buy it from them....
TEN WEEKS LATER......

I got my bike back! Man, I was getting sick of visiting my bike down at the dealership.

They (Platinum One) did a respectable job matching the paint. There was one small blem but it'll never be seen.

A big thanks to Rick down at East Coast HD for helping me get this done.:D
Here's some of the chrome doo dads I added whilst I waited.

Chrome uppers and lowers, fat handle bars, chrome switch housings, chrome master cyclinder, chrome levers, braided lines, mini-tach etc
The mirrors are stock but they gotta go (can't see diddly in their new location)
Very sweeeeet looking ride
Thanks Mark!

The windshield goes back on ASAP. I rode it home (30 miles) yesterday without it and damn near froze.

Wyodude,
With all the good posts about getting through to HD, no one mentioned the real problem here. HD's radical paint sets in 2001 and 2002 were very poor quality. Dealers all over the country had problems. The red 2002 SE Road King was canceled after 425 bikes because of trouble with the radical paint. The Chameleon Flames paint for the Deuce was a nightmare. The Purple 02 SE Road King had problems later in production with the paint. They need to find another company to outsource this work. Glad you got your bike finished. You didn't miss much good riding weather.

It looks great now!
Wyo glad your plan came together, even if it took an act of congress (which is the opposite of progress). Those look like the same bars I'm running. I really like the feel of them.
...looks good wyo! Glad it worked out for ya:D

Needless to say even the new 2003 Radical Paint sets from Harley will have problems. I helped a freind remove a new pant set from an 03 Heritage and upon close inspection, there were some bubbles!, buffed out dull spots and retouched chip areas..........
Shooter,

I've learned alot in the short time I've owned my RK (bought it in May of '02). The radical paint set was on the bike when I bought it. Moreover, the bike had been on the showroom floor for 6 months and the dealer knocked a couple grand off the price to move it. It seemed like a good deal at the time.

If I had it to do over again, I would still buy a RK. I would not care what color it was. I would buy a complete set of tin and bags on ebay and get a local painter to do a custom job.

Live and learn.

regards,

wyo
